Ethan Goffman for The Church of the Oversoul

July 27, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Free

Join local authors Ethan Goffman and Marianne Szlyk in discussing Ethan’s most recent work of fiction.

Ethan Goffman is the author of The Church of the Oversoul and Other Stories, which provides a surrealistic roadmap to our strangest of times. He has also written four other books of fiction and poetry. Although the name is unique on planet Earth, a different version of Ethan Goffman writes about transit issues in the DC region, while an earlier version wrote environmental journalism and a still earlier incarnation composed literary criticism. Yet another Ethan Goffman, somehow coexisting in the same body, lives with his wife and cat (formerly two cats but they have transmigrated into one being) in a cozy and amazingly eco-friendly house in Rockville, Maryland, existing without a car and eating almost no meat.

Ethan (or some version of Ethan) is co-founder of It Takes a Community, a Montgomery College initiative bringing poetry to students and local residents, produces Guerrilla Podcasts dedicated to flash fiction, and is fiction editor for Setu Journal of Literature and Art.

Marianne Szlyk is a professor at Montgomery College. Her poems have appeared in Beltway Poetry Quarterly, Verse-Virtual, One Art, Poetry Breakfast, the anthology Green Elephant, and the anthology Resurrection of a Sunflower. Her fiction has appeared in Mad Swirl, Impspired, and Storyteller Poetry Review. Some of her work has been nominated for Best of the Net and the Pushcart Prize. Her books Why We Never Visited the Elms, On the Other Side of the Window, and I Dream of Empathy are available from Amazon and Bookshop. She and her husband, the writer Ethan Goffman, live with their black cat Tyler who likes to hang out with them while they write.

Both Ethan and Marianne will have copies of their work for sale during the event.

This is an in-person event. Seated capacity at People’s Book is 50 patrons. Standing room is an option. All events are first-come, first-served seating. Accessible seating is always available.
