SUMMARY:Richard Bell for The American Revolution and the Fate of the World
DESCRIPTION:In this revelatory and enthralling book\, award-winning historian Richard Bell reveals the full breadth and depth of America’s founding event. The American Revolution was not only the colonies’ triumphant liberation from the rule of an overbearing England; it was also a cataclysm that pulled in participants from around the globe and threw the entire world order into chaos. Repositioning the Revolution at the center of an international web\, Bell’s narrative ranges as far afield as India\, Africa\, Central America\, and Australia. As his lens widens\, the “War of Independence” manifests itself as a sprawling struggle that upended the lives of millions of people on every continent and fundamentally transformed the way the world works\, disrupting trade\, restructuring penal systems\, stirring famine\, and creating the first global refugee crisis. Bell conveys the impact of these developments at home and abroad by grounding the narrative in the gripping stories of individuals—including women\, minorities\, and other disenfranchised people. The result is an unforgettable and unexpected work of American history that shifts everything we thought we knew about our creation story. \nRichard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which was a finalist for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. His new book\, The American Revolution and the Fate of the World\, was published by Penguin in November 2025. \nCaitlin Marshall (PhD Performance Studies\, University of California Berkeley) is a theater and performance historian and practice based researcher. Her manuscript in progress\, “Power in the Tongue: Sounding America in Red\, Black\, and Brown\,” is a cultural history of what it meant to sound American in the nation’s first independent century. Along with Shellée Haynesworth (Black Broadway on U) she is a co-producer and lead researcher of the new musical\, At the S Street Salon\, based on the archived letters of Georgia Douglas Johnson. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9780593719510 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Emily Lieb for Road to Nowhere: How a Highway Map Wrecked Baltimore
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-1950s Baltimore’s Rosemont neighborhood was alive and vibrant with smart rowhouses\, a sprawling park\, corner grocery stores\, and doctor’s offices. By 1957\, a proposed expressway threatened to gut this Black\, middle-class community from stem to stern. \nThat highway was never built\, but it didn’t matter—even the failure to build it destroyed Rosemont economically\, if not physically. In telling the history of the neighborhood and the notional East–West Expressway\, Emily Lieb shows the interwoven tragedies caused by racism in education\, housing\, and transportation policy. Black families had been attracted to the neighborhood after Baltimore’s Board of School Commissioners converted several white schools into “colored” ones\, which had also laid the groundwork for predatory real-estate agents who bought low from white sellers and sold high to determined Black buyers. Despite financial discrimination\, Black homeowners built a thriving community before the city council formally voted to condemn some nine hundred homes in Rosemont for the expressway\, leading to deflated home values and even more predatory real estate deals. \nDrawing on land records\, oral history\, media coverage\, and policy documents\, Lieb demystifies blockbusting\, redlining\, and prejudicial lending\, highlighting the national patterns at work in a single neighborhood. The result is an absorbing story about the deliberate decisions that produced racial inequalities in housing\, jobs\, health\, and wealth—as well as a testament to the ingenuity of the residents who fought to stay in their homes\, down to today. \nEmily Lieb has a PhD in U.S. history from Columbia University\, and she taught history and urban studies at Seattle University for more than 10 years. She now writes about global health and climate change for a small writing firm in Seattle\, where she lives with her husband and dog. Her work on the history of American cities has appeared in the Nation\, CityLab\, and Politico. Road to Nowhere is her first book. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9780226844381 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Sharon Sliwinski for An Alphabet for Dreamers
DESCRIPTION:A captivating and trailblazing look at how dreams serve as one of our most powerful ways to understand—and radically change—our world. \nBorrowing from the traditional alphabet book genre for children\, An Alphabet for Dreamers provides adult readers with a new grammar for dreams\, or what neuroscientist Sidarta Ribeiro calls “oracles of the night.” In this book\, Sharon Sliwinski restores dreaming to its proper place as an important worldmaking activity\, one that offers a gateway to another way of seeing. Each of the short chapters engages a dream from the historical record—from both the recent and distant past—to show how these experiences can help make sense of profound social conflicts and transform our shared reality. \nThinking alongside the dreams of powerful exemplars—from Harriet Tubman to contemporary Indigenous activist Abigail Echo-Hawk—readers come to understand how dream life is a crucial resource for generating new worlds and new ways of being. The book brings together urgent concerns from the domains of critical theory\, visual culture\, and mental health to show how dreaming serves as a vital source of knowledge and a critical mode of thinking. \nAs with traditional alphabet books\, illustrations provide an integral voice. Each chapter of the book is accompanied by an original watercolor painting by Melinda Josie that visually underscores the way dreams serve as a unique medium for processing our lived experience. Together\, the images and text form a delicate dialogue\, drawing attention to the details of the central scenes\, extending the book’s special mode of thinking in painted form. \nBy working alongside dreamers from the past and present\, An Alphabet for Dreamers begins a new and much-needed conversation about the social and political importance of dream life. \nSharon Sliwinski is Professor of Information and Media Studies at Western University in Canada. Her previous books include Human Rights in Camera\, Dreaming in Dark Times\, and Photography and the Optical Unconscious. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9780262049795 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde for We Can be Brave
DESCRIPTION:Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde is no stranger to bravery in the face of bullies. In this adaptation of her New York Times bestselling How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith\, Bishop Budde and acclaimed novelist Bryan Bliss share lessons in how to be brave in life’s hardest moments. \nThe decisive moments in life—even in the life of a young person—are those pivot points when we’re called on to push past our fears and act courageously in the face of injustice and bullying. In We Can Be Brave\, Budde shows readers examples of how to respond even in the toughest times. Bravery is not a singular occurrence; it’s a journey that we can choose to undertake every day and it begins when we’re young. \nBudde explores the range of decisive moments people of all ages encounter\, from the most visible and dramatic (the decision to go)\, to the internal and personal (the decision to stay)\, to brave choices made with an eye toward the future (the decision to start)\, those born of suffering (the decision to accept that which we did not choose)\, and those that come as surprises (the decision to step up to the plate). Drawing on examples relevant to young readers ranging from Harry Potter to Martin Luther King Jr.\, she weaves together personal experiences with stories from scripture\, history\, and pop culture of how adults and kids throughout history have faced these moments and heeded the call to be brave in challenging times. \nMariann Edgar Budde is the bishop and spiritual leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington\, D.C.\, and the Washington National Cathedral. Prior to her election in 2011\, she was a parish priest in Minneapolis for eighteen years. She has appeared on PBS NewsHour\, Meet the Press\, Good Morning America\, and the Today show\, among others. Bishop Budde earned her master’s in divinity and doctor of ministry from Virginia Theological Seminary. \nRobert P. Jones is the president and founder of Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and a New York Times bestselling author. His most recent book is The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy and the Path to a Shared American Future. Jones writes regularly on politics\, culture\, and religion for The Atlantic\, TIME\, Religion News Service\, and other outlets. He is frequently featured in major national media\, such as CNN\, MSNBC\, NPR\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and others. He is also the author of White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity\, which won a 2021 American Book Award; and author of The End of White Christian America\, which won the 2019 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. Jones writes weekly at http://www.whitetoolong.net\, a newsletter focused on religion\, racial justice\, and democracy. He holds a Ph.D. in religion from Emory University and an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9798217113811 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Robert Stack for Silent No Longer
DESCRIPTION:From one of the nation’s most dedicated advocates for those with disabilities\, an exposé of the insidious takeover of disability supports by private equity firms and a clarion call for urgent systemic change in a broken industry that has mistreated millions. \nSince ancient times\, people with disabilities have been ridiculed\, ignored\, and even tortured—and while this problem has plagued society for far too long\, the media has largely turned a blind eye to it. \nSilent No Longer is the story of Robert Stack’s forty-year career in the disability industry\, revealing the horrible neglect that persists today and asking why tens of thousands of people are still unnecessarily incarcerated in institutions that fail them. Stack is a veteran of the industry and the founder and CEO of Community Options—one of the largest non-profit organizations supporting persons with disabilities today—and offers a firsthand account of the neglect and abuse he has witnessed in his decades of advocacy. \nIn this eye-opening dive into the disability industry\, Stack pulls back the curtain on the systemic mistreatment that has plagued the disability community for far too long: \n\nExposing the disturbing rise of private equity firms investing in facilities that prioritize profits over care\nHighlighting the tactics used to make substandard institutions appear high-quality\nRevealing the stark disparities in funding and care across the United States\n\nWith over 7 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in America\, and some 80 million family members who love and care for them\, Silent No Longer is a crucial resource for industry professionals and policymakers alike—and a demand that we restore dignity to those most vulnerable members of our society. \nRobert Stack has been a national leader in enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is a pioneer in promoting community-based housing and workforce training\, advocating against outdated institutional practices. Starting as a young civil servant in 1980\, Stack led efforts to close large institutions and transition individuals to community settings\, long before the ADA and Olmstead decision formalized these changes. In 1989\, he founded Community Options to provide dignified living and employment opportunities for people with disabilities\, which now serves over 5\,000 individuals across 12 states. As president and CEO\, Stack has continuously advocated for disability rights on national and international stages\, addressing\nissues such as the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on institutionalized individuals and engaging with key government bodies to drive reform. Recently\, he was appointed trustee of the Pennsylvania Advocacy and Resources for Autism and Intellectual Disability.\n\nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below:\nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781637747377\nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Max Delsohn for Crawl
DESCRIPTION:A darkly comic\, introspective debut collection that looks beneath the surface of trans life in 2010s Seattle \n\n\nPeople called it paradise\, but baby\, it wasn’t. \nWhat to do when starting testosterone unlocks a newfound desire for men? How to respond when your boss’s boss asks if you’ve had “the surgery” and then requests you talk her niece out of transitioning? What obligation do you have to intervene in the faltering mental health of the baby trans drug dealer you’ve met only once while tripping on the acid he sold you? \nThe young transmasculine characters in Crawl navigate these and other questions in the dive bars\, bathhouses\, parks\, workplaces\, music venues\, beaches\, and college campuses of 2010s Seattle. Max Delsohn’s stories—by turns exuberant\, heartfelt\, tragic\, and wry—portray the pleasures and pains of sex and romance\, the possibilities and ambivalences of gender expression\, and the joys and failures of community in a city and a time that has branded itself a radical queer utopia but proves much more complicated in reality. \n\n  \nMax Delsohn’s writing appears in McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern\, VICE\, Joyland\, The Rumpus\, and Triangle House\, among other places. He earned his MFA in fiction from Syracuse University. He lives in Los Angeles. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781644453612 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Keya Chatterjee for The Revolution Will Not be Rated G
DESCRIPTION:In 2042 Washington\, D.C.\, the United States has fractured into two starkly divided worlds: Uplands\, where the elite\, wealthy\, and predominantly white hold power\, and Lowlands\, where the marginalized are abandoned to fend for themselves. \nAria Petros\, a fearless organizer for the underground resistance collective Expectus\, must lead a desperate mission to protect her people as a catastrophic hurricane barrels toward the eastern seaboard. But the fight for survival is only the beginning—Aria soon realizes that the only way to dismantle the corrupt Upland regime is to infiltrate it from within. \nHer best chance? Neil Rao\, a high school flame she hasn’t seen in years—now the golden boy of Upland and son of the most powerful woman in government. Trusting him could mean salvation. Falling for him again could mean ruin. \nAs Hurricane Eamon tears through the Atlantic coast\, Aria and Neil are thrust into a battle far greater than the storm itself—one that will determine the fate of a divided nation. In the wreckage\, they must navigate treachery\, desire\, and the weight of revolution—before it’s too late. \nKeya Chatterjee is executive director of Free DC and co-founder of Freedom Trainers. She is an avid reader\, an author\, and an activist for climate justice and democracy. Keya is committed to imagining and creating a thriving and inclusive future full of joy and caring. She started her career at NASA and was Executive Director of the US Climate Action Network for almost a decade\, where she was a key voice in civil society for strengthening the Paris Climate Agreement and the Inflation Reduction Act. Keya also served two terms as a hyper local elected official in Washington\, DC\, where she lives with her husband and son. She previously published a nonfiction book\, The Zero Footprint Baby: How to Save the Planet While Raising a Healthy Baby\, and op-eds in many outlets including Newsweek\, Reuters\, and Huffington Post. \nNadine Bloch is an outside-the-box activist artist\, political community organizer\, strategic nonviolent actionista and the Training Director for Beautiful Trouble. Her work explores the potent intersection of art and politics\, where creative cultural resistance is not only effective political action\, but also a powerful way to reclaim agency over our own lives\, fight oppressive systems\, and invest in our communities — all while having more fun than the other side! \n  \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9798991413435 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Karen Palmer for She's Under Here
DESCRIPTION:“Once upon a time\, I disappeared.” So begins Karen Palmer’s harrowing and redemptive memoir\, She’s Under Here. \nIn 1989\, shortly after her second marriage\, Palmer and her new husband quit their jobs without notice. They pulled her two young daughters out of school and buckled them into the rear seat of a used car purchased with cash. The trunk was packed with clothing and toys\, pillows and blankets\, four place settings\, one pot\, one pan\, and a sack that contained every penny they had. Living with the fear of Palmer’s dangerous ex-husband had become untenable: This was DIY witness protection. \nIn this searingly honest and heart-wrenching account\, Palmer examines why she ended up trapped\, how she escaped\, and the ongoing perils of life constructed around a false identity. She ruthlessly explores the lines between desire and fear\, victim and perpetrator\, captivity and freedom\, and exposes myriad aspects of what it means to make difficult choices as a woman\, when none of the options are good. She’s Under Here is a haunting meditation on themes of disappearance\, betrayal\, and private violence\, and it is utterly unforgettable. \nKaren Palmer is a Pushcart Prize winner and has received grants from the NEA and Colorado Council on the Arts. She’s Under Here grew out of her award-winning essay “The Reader Is the Protagonist\,” first published in Virginia Quarterly Review and selected by Leslie Jamison for inclusion in Best American Essays 2017. More recently her short story “Birds of Paradise”  won the 2022 Emily Clark Balch Prize for Fiction. Her writing has appeared in The Rumpus\, The Kenyon Review\, Arts & Letters\, and Kalliope\, among others. She lives in Los Angeles. \nErin Palmer is a lawyer\, advocate\, and community builder dedicated to public and community service. She works at the national nonprofit Pro Bono Institute\, where she supports pro bono legal efforts that expand access to justice. Erin is deeply involved in her local community\, having served for six years as a neighborhood-level elected official and currently serving on the board of her local Main Street and as Chair of the Fair Budget Coalition’s executive committee. \nBefore working at Pro Bono Institute\, Erin ran a highly competitive campaign for DC Council Chair\, earning attention for her detailed DC Council Accountability Plan and her commitment to transparent\, people-powered governance. She has also served as an ethics lawyer for the federal Judiciary\, practiced as a litigation associate focused on pro bono efforts including asylum\, education access\, and youth justice reform\, supervised a law school human rights clinic\, and clerked for the DC Court of Appeals. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781643757544 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Storytime: Caroline Kusin Pritchard for The Day the Books Disappeared
DESCRIPTION:All-star authors Joanna Ho (Eyes That Kiss in the Corners) and Caroline Kusin Pritchard (The Keeper of Stories) team up with Caldecott Medalist and National Book Award Winner Dan Santat in this celebration of the freedom to read. \nArnold didn’t mean for the books to disappear—not exactly. It all started because he liked his book about airplanes best. Why would anyone want to read about tomatoes or ostriches or submarines (ew\, the worst!) when they could read about planes\, instead? \nWhen Arnold realizes—POOF!—he can make the other books vanish\, he goes a little too far. Before he knows it\, all the books are gone…including his. Can Arnold figure out how to bring them back before it’s too late? \nThis book about books celebrates themes of empathy\, interconnectedness\, and the value of diverse and differing perspectives. \nCaroline Kusin Pritchard is the author of many children’s books\, including Gitty and Kvetch\, Where is Poppy?\, and The Keeper of Stories\, which is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection and received three starred reviews. She co-hosts the Kidlit Happy Hour podcast with author Joanna Ho. SUMMARY:Immigration Detention Panel
DESCRIPTION:The United States has the most extensive immigration detention system in the world\, expanding from a capacity of less than 5\,000 detainees per day in the 1980s to 52\,000 by 2019. While the most vociferous anti-immigrant rhetoric may be attributed to Republicans\, US detention infrastructure has grown exponentially regardless of the political party in power as reports of abysmal detention conditions pile up. \nNancy Hiemstra and Deirdre Conlon provide a damning exposé of the ways immigration detention generates income. At the same time\, those detained are starved\, sickened\, and exploited as a matter of routine detention operations. Drawing on over a decade of research focusing on detention centers in New Jersey and New York\, the authors map public-private financial relationships and trace how detention contracts for food\, medical care\, and in-facility stores are fought over to the penny. By dissecting the inner workings of immigration detention\, they show a system governed by a capitalist logic that produces sickening and corrupting dependencies in communities across the US. \nComing at a pivotal social and political moment\, Immigration Detention Inc. makes the case for dismantling immigration detention regimes everywhere. \nNancy Hiemstra is a political geographer whose research focuses on US immigration enforcement policies. She is the author of Detain and Deport: The Chaotic U.S. Immigration Enforcement Regime and co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention. She is Associate Professor at Stony Brook University in Long Island\, New York\, US. \nDeirdre Conlon is a critical geographer working in the US and Britain. Her work focuses on how immigration and border controls are proliferating as they are monetized. She is co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention and Carceral Spaces: Mobility and Agency in Imprisonment and Migrant Detention. She is Associate Professor based at the University of Leeds. \nSetareh Ghandehari is the Advocacy Director for the Detention Watch Network\, a national coalition building power through collective advocacy\, grassroots organizing and strategic communications to abolish immigration detention in the United States. She works alongside other DWN staff and members to abolish immigration detention in the United States\, and has been involved in social justice movements for over 20 years. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9780745349466 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Christopher C. Gorham for Matisse at War
DESCRIPTION:In 1940\, with the Nazis sweeping through France\, Henri Matisse found himself at a personal and artistic crossroads. His 42-year marriage had ended\, he was gravely ill\, and after decades at the forefront of modern art\, he was beset by doubt. As scores of famous figures escaped the country\, Matisse took refuge in Nice\, with his companion\, Lydia Delectorskaya. By defiantly remaining\, Matisse was a source of inspiration for his nation. While enemy agents and Resistance fighters played cat-and-mouse in the alleyways of Nice\, Matisse’s son\, Jean\, engaged in sabotage efforts with the Allies. In Paris\, under the swastika\, Matisse’s estranged wife\, Amélie\, worked for the Communist underground. His beloved daughter\, Marguerite\, active in the French Resistance\, was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo\, sentenced to Ravensbruck concentration camp-and miraculously escaped when her train was halted by Allied bombs. His younger\, son\, Pierre helped Jewish artists escape to New York; even his teenaged grandson risked his life by defying the Germans and their Vichy collaborators. Amidst this chaos\, Matisse responded to the dark days of war by inventing a dazzling new paper technique that led to some of his most iconic pieces\, including The Fall of Icarus\, his profile of Charles De Gaulle\, Monsieur Loyal\, and his groundbreaking cut-out book\, Jazz. His wartime works were acts of resistance\, subtly patriotic and daringly new. Drawing on intimate letters and a multitude of other sources\, Christopher C. Gorham illuminates this momentous stage of Matisse’s life as never before\, revealing an artist on a journey of reinvention\, wrenching meaning from the suffering of war\, and holding up the light of human imagination against the torch of fascism to create some of the most exciting work of his career\, of the 20th century\, and in the history of art. \nChristopher C. Gorham is a lawyer\, educator\, and acclaimed author whose books include Matisse at War and The Confidante. He is a frequent speaker at conferences\, literary events\, colleges\, and book club gatherings. He currently lives in Boston and can be found online at ChristopherCGorham.com \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9780806544168 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Antonia Hylton for Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum
DESCRIPTION:In the tradition of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks\, this New York Times bestseller is a page-turning account of one of the nation’s last segregated asylums…”a book that left me breathless” (Clint Smith). \nFor centuries\, Black patients have been absent from our history books. Madness transports readers through the ninety-three-year history of Crownsville Hospital\, one of the last segregated asylums with surviving records and a campus that still stands to this day in Anne Arundel County\, Maryland. Antonia Hylton blends the intimate tales of patients and employees whose lives were shaped by Crownsville with a decade-worth of investigative research and archival documents. Madness chronicles the stories of Black families whose mental health suffered as they tried\, and sometimes failed\, to find safety and dignity. Hylton also grapples with her own family’s experiences with mental illness\, and the secrecy and shame that it reproduced for generations. \nAs Crownsville Hospital grew from an antebellum-style work camp to a tiny city sitting on 1\,500 acres\, the institution became a microcosm of America’s evolving battles over slavery\, racial integration\, and civil rights. Hylton traces the legacy of slavery to the treatment of Black people’s bodies and minds in our current mental healthcare system. It is a captivating and heartbreaking meditation on how America decides who is sick or criminal\, and who is worthy of our care or irredeemable. \nAntonia Hylton is a Peabody and Emmy-award winning journalist\, co-anchor of MSNBC / Weekend Primetime\, and the co-host of the hit podcast Southlake and Grapevine. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University\, where she received prizes for her investigative research on race\, mass incarceration and the history of psychiatry. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781538723692 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Carolivia Herron for Thereafter Johnnie
DESCRIPTION:The Snowdon family stands as a pinnacle of Black excellence in Washington\, D.C.: educated\, affluent\, and influential. John Christopher\, the patriarch\, is revered by his medical students at Howard University. His wife\, Camille\, governs an elegant house overlooking Rock Creek Park and devotes herself to reading\, gardening\, and raising their three daughters—Cynthia\, Patricia\, and Eva. \nYears later\, when John Christopher’s granddaughter Johnnie comes to seek the truth about her own parentage\, she unveils a legacy of unspeakable family secrets tangled up in America’s original sin. What begins as a quest for identity spirals into an apocalyptic vision of a nation on the brink of ruin. \nBy turns a poetic epic\, a ghost story\, a historical saga\, and a chilling dystopian fable\, Thereafter Johnnie is a unique\, uniquely American\, fusion of myth and reality: an erotic\, horrifying\, and even hopeful reckoning. Editor Jeremy Davies says\, “It’s extremely ambitious. It takes in a whole bunch of registers and literary approaches\, from biblical to classical to poetic to supernatural and science-fictiony.” \nFor the Washingtonian\, Ike Allen says\, “Enigmatic and fable-like\, reviewers compared it to James Joyce’s take on Dublin\,” and the New York Times wrote that it “belonged in the company of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple\, Toni Morrison’s Beloved\, and Gloria Naylor’s Linden Hills.” \nCarolivia Herron is an African American Jewish author and scholar with her main interests in writing novels and children’s books\, and teaching epic literature\, African American studies\, Classics\, and multimedia storytelling. Currently she teaches Classics and English in the Howard University Department of Literature and Writing. She earned her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Pennsylvania. \nBefore coming to Howard\, she held professorial positions at Harvard\, Mount Holyoke\, California State\, Arizona State\, and William and Mary. Herron’s scholarship includes the Oxford edition of the Selected Works of Angelina Weld Grimké\, several essays on African American epic tradition\, and the influence of John Milton on African American culture. She has several books in press (Kindergarten Blues\, Grilled Cheese\, seasongs\, and Asenath and Our Song of Songs). \nThe play\, Pharsalia; or\, For Crying Out Loud\, commissioned by Theater J is her most recent work. Pharsalia links Lucan’s ancient Roman epic of the same name\, with Pharsalia Plantation in Virginia\, where Carolivia’s formerly enslaved ancestors lived. \nHer great-great-grandmother\, Mary Ann Lumpkin\, survived her enslaver and used his money to found Virginia Union University. The opera\, Let Freedom Sing: The Story of Marian Anderson (Bruce Adolphe composer) with Carolivia’s libretto was originally produced by the Washington National Opera and the Washington Performing Arts Society. It was restaged in 2023 by Mobile Opera in Alabama. Carolivia also hosts a weekly radio show\, Epic City\, on Takoma Radio. In addition\, she publishes works by Black Jews of Africa. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/p/books/thereafter-johnnie-carolivia-herron/292584 \nThis is an in-person event.
