SUMMARY:Joshua Colangelo-Bryan for Through the Gates of Hell
DESCRIPTION:An inspiring true story about an American attorney and his client confronting prejudice and persecution in a prison outside the law\, as one fights for the other’s freedom\, and the other fights for his life. \n“We’ll be watching\,” the sergeant said\, pointing at a video monitor inside Camp Echo’s guard booth. “For your protection.” \nIn 2004\, attorney Joshua Colangelo-Bryan arrived at Guantanamo Bay to meet Jaber Mohammed\, one of six Bahraini detainees his firm had agreed to represent. Colangelo-Bryan had heard these men were “among the most dangerous\, best-trained\, vicious killers on the face of the earth\,” as Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld put it. Colangelo-Bryan didn’t buy the rhetoric\, but did find himself wondering if he was about to meet a killer. \nFar from being threatening\, though\, Mohammed welcomed Colangelo-Bryan\, even as his ankle was shackled to the floor. Why was Mohammed there? Was he guilty of a crime? These were among the questions Colangelo-Bryan had to answer. Surprisingly\, the two spoke for hours about their lives. Mohammed also detailed the inhumane conditions at the prison\, including abuse by guards and solitary confinement. \nA friendship grew over time\, as Colangelo-Bryan worked to bring justice to Mohammed. The Bush administration claimed any “enemy combatant” could be held in Guantanamo forever without a trial\, and it became clear that litigation was unlikely to free the Bahrainis. And so\, as Mohammed lost hope\, Colangelo-Bryan devised a plan to leverage the media and pressure the Bahraini government to negotiate for the release of its citizens. Colangelo- Bryan’s long fight for the Bahrainis was ultimately successful\, and in 2007\, after several suicide attempts\, Mohammed was freed. \nThrough the Gates of Hell is a powerful account of an unlikely friendship and what it takes to fight for human rights in the post–9/11 era. \nJoshua Colangelo-Bryan is Special Counsel at Human Rights First\, where he spearheads innovative impact litigation and advocacy efforts to advance international human rights\, uphold democratic principles\, and support defenders of human rights globally. For over 20 years\, his practice has focused on human rights\, civil rights\, and national security matters\, including representing six now-released Guantanamo Bay detainees and serving as counsel to peaceful protestors who were attacked in 2017 by Turkish security agents in Washington\, D.C. He also conducts human rights investigations in countries such as Yemen\, Syria\, and Bahrain\, and defends parties named in Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation\, including clients advocating for Palestinian rights and religious pluralism in India. Josh previously served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo\, working on the prosecution of war crimes cases and serving as a liaison to Yugoslav and Serbian officials. \nUzra Zeya joined Human Rights First (HRF) as President and CEO in April 2025.  In this role\, she leads HRF efforts to advance human rights for all\, defend democracy at home and abroad\, uphold the rule of law\, and protect vulnerable populations fleeing oppression.  \nAs U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security\, Democracy\, and Human Rights from July 2021 to January 2025\, she led global U.S. diplomacy to advance human rights\, strengthen rule of law\, support refugees\, elevate the fight against corruption\, and combat transnational crime and human trafficking from 2021-25. Concurrently\, she was U.S. special coordinator for Tibetan issues\, rallying international partners to support Tibetans’ human rights and preserve their unique identity. \n As president and CEO of the Alliance for Peacebuilding\, she led a non-partisan network of 150+ organizations working on peaceful conflict resolution in 180+ countries. Her distinguished diplomatic career included senior roles at U.S. embassies in France and India\, the Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights\, and Labor\, and advising Secretaries of State Rice and Clinton. She also served in Syria\, Egypt\, Oman\, and Jamaica\, and speaks French\, Arabic\, and Spanish. \nZeya co-authored a 2021 Council on Foreign Relations report that shaped State Department modernization. She is on the University of Notre Dame Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies Board of Advisors. She was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur and the Cross of Commander of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas in recognition of her contributions to a more just and peaceful world. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781967494002 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Danielle M. Reiff for Overcoming Information Chaos
DESCRIPTION:Just a few decades into the digital age\, we are learning the hard way that divisive information can contribute to widespread social and political polarization. How can we heal those divisions and cultivate healthier\, more peaceful communities? There is good reason to raise alarm bells about political polarization in the US. When grievances over inequality or election integrity erupt\, a country can be at greater risk for political violence. Rapidly spreading misinformation and disinformation can exacerbate societal discontent and divisions. Media literacy is a new and essential element of peacebuilding in the digital age. This book helps us understand how the media ecosystem has changed since the digital transition. It also provides practical guidance to help all citizens sort through the massive quantities of information we encounter daily\, mitigate the diffusion of disinformation\, and lean into constructive civic engagement that bridges our divides and builds community. In the digital age\, peacebuilding starts with learning to use the media responsibly. Ultimately\, it’s up to each of us to slow down and be savvier in our interactions with information and each other. Overcoming Information Chaos— written by a team of leading media scholars and practitioners\, legal experts\, psychologists\, democracy specialists\, and peacebuilders— provides expert guidance about how to defend ourselves against false information. The book also presents practical resources that can be applied in our busy routines\, helping us to live as responsible citizens— people who mitigate the divisive consequences of information disorder and cultivate unity in diversity. \nDanielle M. Reiff is a peacebuilder\, writer\, and editor of Overcoming Information Chaos: A Guide to Building Peaceful Communities in the Digital Age. Her writing has appeared in Newsweek and other publications.  As a member of the U.S. diplomatic corps for twenty years\, Danielle specialized in supporting democratic transitions and peacebuilding around the world. After retiring\, she founded the non-partisan Peacebuilders initiative to promote empathy\, dialogue\, consultation\, and other forms of nonviolence for advancing social change and political reform. Danielle earned a graduate degree in International Relations and Peace from Sciences Po in Paris\, France as a member of the first ever cadre of Rotary Peace Fellows. In 2025\, she earned an executive certificate in public leadership from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso from 1998-2000. Danielle has been a Baha’i since 1997. SUMMARY:Christopher Stephens and Louise Radnofsky for The Light of Day
DESCRIPTION:‘Sir\, we are homosexuals’ \nSo began the letter penned by Roger Butler and sent to several British newspaper editors – some of whom were so shocked they thought it was a hoax – in June 1960. Writing such a letter seven years before the decriminalisation of homosexuality was a radical and dangerous move. It was a risk that set a major milestone in the fight for gay rights – one that has been almost entirely forgotten. \nThis is the story of the first man to come out voluntarily\, using his own name\, to the entire British public\, a decade before activists started positioning gay people everywhere to ‘come out proud’. Taking us through a criminalised underworld of gay pubs\, parties and activist meetings\, The Light of Day charts how Roger helped bring about the legalisation of homosexuality\, but soon found himself marginalised from the movement he kickstarted after losing his sight in his early 30s. \nEnter Christopher – a student asked to visit and read to an old\, blind man at the beginning of a new century. As their intergenerational friendship bloomed\, Roger came to trust Christopher with his most precious possession: memoirs of his revolutionary past\, locked away in his home. After Roger’s death\, Christopher opened a series of unsent  letters\, left in a pink folder\, addressed to him. They contained Roger’s final wish\, for Christopher finally to bring his remarkable\, hidden story into the light of day. \nChristopher Stephens is the Head of Southlands College and Director of the Susanna Wesley Foundation at the University of Roehampton\, London. Educated at Christ Church\, Oxford\, his academic interests are in both ancient Church History and practices in contemporary faith communities\, including matters of diversity and inclusion. Christopher was next of kin to Roger Butler\, inheriting Roger’s extensive archive of writings and letter correspondences on his death. The documents remain in Christopher’s ownership. \nLouise Radnofsky is a reporter for The Wall Street Journal in Washington\, D.C.\, where she covered the White House and a variety of social policy beats over a decade including healthcare\, immigration and currently\, sports. She holds BA and Master of Studies degrees in modern history from Oxford\,\, and a Master of Science degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9781035421527 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Nancy Garruba for The Vanishing of Rose B.
DESCRIPTION:Rose B. defied mid-century expectations of what a woman could be and do. Not only a devoted wife and mother\, and one never to be seen without gloves and a hat\, she was the family’s main breadwinner. Exemplary\, indeed—although in private\, Rose suffered her charismatic\, volatile husband’s abuse\, abuse witnessed by their twin daughters\, Claire and Frances. Frances urged Rose to divorce\, Claire played mediator\, and Rose persevered\, determined to preserve her family\, even if at cost to herself. But a violent incident one spring evening would upset Rose’s plan and propel Frances to a life far from her parents and sister. \nDecades later\, Claire’s a reclusive high school art teacher who creates beautiful photographs but never exhibits. Frances is an architect in Los Angeles. Rose has died\, and Frances has flown home to help Claire sort through their mother’s clothes. Claire\, insisting that Frances is their mother’s mirror image\, one that she must capture\, asks Frances to pose for her as Rose\, dressed in Rose’s clothes. Frances\, wanting to force a discussion of that long-ago violent spring evening\, agrees\, but on one condition: She’ll tell stories as she poses\, stories about Rose. Told in two voices—that of the dynamic\, conflicted Frances and the tender\, diffident Claire\, who has her own stories about Rose—The Vanishing of Rose B. explores the difficulties mothers and daughters encounter in defining themselves within the world and against each other. \nNancy Garruba is a writer\, artist\, and long-time DC resident. At one time a rare book conservator at the Library of Congress\, she went on to study bookmaking history\, book design\, and the making of artist’s books—her writing combined with visual images. She’s the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the DC Commission on the Arts\, and of awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Her artist’s books Skin of Glass and Not Altogether True Not Altogether False are in collections including the Museum of Modern Art\, Art Institute of Chicago\, Eastman Museum\, and the International Center for Photography\, among others. The Vanishing of Rose B. is her debut novel. \nSusannah George is a Washington Post national security and foreign affairs correspondent based in Washington DC. For over a decade she has reported from some of the most consequential international stories of the day\, from the rise and fall of the Islamic State in Iraq to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and Iranian influence across the Middle East in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks. Before joining the Washington Post Ms. George was a correspondent for the Associated Press and a producer for National Public Radio. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781947175778 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Bob Dover for Bridges of Washington\, D.C.
DESCRIPTION:Explore the history of our nation’s capital through this history of its bridges. \nIn the late 1700s\, the first bridges\, now completely gone\, connected the new Federal City to the outside world. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries\, more and bigger crossings arose to support industry\, allow the expansion of suburbs\, commemorate cultural and civic leaders\, and enhance the aesthetics of the District’s waterfronts and parks. Although the city abandoned civic-minded\, commemorative\, and monumental constructions for utilitarian highway monoliths in the mid-twentieth century\, a recent renaissance has seen a welcome shift to walkability and beauty instead of brute utility. \nUsing the city’s bridges as an index of the times\, author and D.C. native Bob Dover tracks the growth\, decay\, and rebirth of the District from the 1750s to today. \nBob Dover is a geologist with 37 years of experience in environmental impact assessment. A Washington\, DC native\, he is a graduate of Beloit College and the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. His primary geologic interest is the role of geology and topography in influencing human settlement patterns\, architecture\, and historical events. In 2022\, he published Bridgespotting: A Guide to Bridges that Connect People\, Places\, and Times\, a book that examined uses of bridges for tourism and recreation. He is a contributor of bridge photos and documentation to the historicbridges.org website\, and an active participant in the Vermont Covered Bridge Society. Recently retired\, he lives just outside of Washington in Columbia\, Maryland. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781467170048 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Melanie D.G. Kaplan for Lab Dog
DESCRIPTION:The “remarkable” (Dr. Jane Goodall) story of a beagle’s past\, and the future of animal research  \nWhen journalist Melanie D.G. Kaplan adopted her beagle Hammy\, all she knew was that he had spent nearly four years in a research lab. Curious to know more about this gentle creature’s past\, as well as the broader world of animal research\, Kaplan—with Hammy in tow—embarks on a quest for answers. How did Hammy end up in a research facility? Why are we still using millions of animals a year in experiments? What have we learned from them? Is there another way? \nIn Lab Dog\, Kaplan investigates the breeding and use of beagles for biomedical research\, drug and product testing\, and education. She takes readers on a journey\, peeking behind laboratory doors and visiting with researchers\, activists\, ethicists\, veterinarians\, lawmakers\, and innovators. Along the way\, she finds thoughtful and caring humans on all sides of the debate\, explores promising developments in nonanimal testing\, and discovers puzzle pieces from Hammy’s past. Equal parts journalism and love story\, Lab Dog offers a nuanced view on our relationship with a species that we both love and exploit\, and a reason to hope for a better future for all. \nMelanie D. G. Kaplan is a longtime independent journalist whose travel and science writing has appeared in the Atlantic\, the Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, and National Parks magazine. She is a graduate of Columbia Journalism School\, a 2021–2022 MIT Knight Science Journalism fellow\, and a third-generation Washington\, DC\, native. Kaplan has lived most of her life with hounds. \nMike Tidwell is a longtime Takoma Park author and climate activist. His previous six books include Bayou Farewell (2003) about the disappearing wetlands in south Louisiana. As a contributing writer for The Washington Post\, he has won four Lowell Thomas Awards\, the highest prize in American travel journalism. In 2002 he founded the Chesapeake Climate Action Network\, where he has led local and national campaigns for clean energy. He lives on Willow Avenue in Takoma Park with his wife Beth and their cat Macy Gray. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781541604988 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Jason G. Green for Too Precious to Lose
DESCRIPTION:A moving and inspiring memoir from a former Obama White House staffer\, about his rural Maryland family’s untold history\, the merger of three churches—one Black\, two white—and how a radical embrace of community became their salvation\, and his. \nJason Green was raised on fellowship—literally. Fellowship Lane\, the once unpaved road he grew up on\, served as a spiritual metaphor throughout his coming of age. A precocious preacher’s kid\, Green felt a call to the ministry but ultimately devoted himself to the people in a different way—through public service. After working on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign\, he spent four and a half years working in the White House as special assistant to President Obama. \nHowever\, Green’s government career was cut short by a devastating call that it appeared his ninety-five-year-old grandmother was on her presumptive deathbed. At her side\, he listened while she detailed her life story dating back to her 1918 birth in Quince Orchard\, a town that no longer exists. He was preoccupied with disbelief; how could he have never known the true legacy of his tiny community? How could a whole town’s existence be erased but for the memory of a few surviving elders? Green’s historical research uncovered a surprising trove of tales about the determination of his newly freed ancestors to build an African American house of worship\, and how generations later\, on the eve of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s assassination\, their progeny would be at the center of a brave decision to create an integrated church. Quince Orchard’s lost story is part of what Green calls the texture in the American fabric: the moral leadership of the Black church\, the longstanding resilience of the Black community\, and the transformative love of the Black family. \nFueled by a new understanding of where he comes from\, Green traces one family through a century of life in a single community\, asking deeply personal questions about belonging and finding answers from the compassionate\, communal-led lives of his forebears. \nJason G. Green is a Maryland-born community organizer\, attorney\, storyteller and entrepreneur. Green served as special assistant to the president\, and associate White House Counsel to President Obama\, advising on economic and domestic policy matters. Green co-founded SkillSmart\, a company that reshapes how communities measure economic impact\, and is CEO of EverGreen Labs\, where he supports visionary organizations working to expand economic opportunity and strengthen community. Green serves as trustee to the Pleasant View Historic Association and supports its efforts to preserve the historic site. His award-winning documentary\, Finding Fellowship\, explores the rich history of Quince Orchard and the fight to preserve its legacy. A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and Yale Law School\, Green remains rooted in the work of truth and justice\, investing in stories that remind us who we are. He currently spends time between Maryland and Dallas\, Texas\, with his wife Ritu and son Aidan. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9780593731710 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Stephanie Shonekan for Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's Sorrow Tears and Blood
DESCRIPTION:Sorrow Tears and Blood offers a glimpse into the complicated social\, cultural\, and political phenomenon that is Nigeria.\n\nThough Nigeria is the most populous African country\, and sometimes called the “Giant of Africa\,” Fela’s album sheds a sharp light on the reasons why Nigeria has not lived up to its potential. While the text primarily hovers over 1977 (the year of the album’s release) as a critical cultural moment in Nigerian history\, it also explores the album in the context of a wider look at how colonialism and its aftermath impacted the social\, political\, and economic environment in Nigeria\, and how Western imperialism continues to affect Nigerian identity and life. As we reflect on Nigeria’s turbulent post-independent political and social history\, Sorrow Tears and Blood offers a rich sonic and lyrical landscape in which to interrogate the potency of Fela’s message for generations to come. \nStephanie Shonekan is Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and professor of ethnomusicology  at the University of Maryland. Previously she was a faculty member and administrator at the University of Missouri and the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. Shonekan earned a doctorate in ethnomusicology and folklore with a minor in African American studies in 2003 from Indiana University. She has published articles and book chapters on afrobeat\, Fela Kuti\, Nigerian and African American hip-hop\, soul music and country music. Her publications explore the nexus where identity\, history\, culture and music meet. Her books include The Life of Camilla Williams: African American Classical Singer and Opera Diva (2011)\, Soul\, Country\, and the USA: Race and Identity in American Music Culture (2015)\, Black Lives Matter & Music (2018)\, Black Resistance in the Americas (2018)\, Dear Department Chair: Letters from Black Women Leaders to the Next Generation (2023)\, and Sorrow\, Tears and Blood (2025). \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9798765113097 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Max Huffman for Dogtangle
DESCRIPTION:A satirical comedy about an ambitious power couple in a bleak corporate landscape who defy God and nature to create a modern Cerberus for their time.\n\nDogtangle opens with a town hall meeting in a Taco Bell nestled in the bland corporate environment of Business Park. A man\, bleating to anyone who will listen about the evils of current zoning laws\, meets a woman who works in pharmaceutical marketing. They begin a relationship. They get married. From their union springs the idea of the Hypermutt: a many-headed mass of dogs that absorbs each new dog it encounters. This debut graphic novel from Chicago cartoonist Max Huffman\, about an awful power couple who defy God and nature in creating a hound of hell for our times\, is at turns a rich satirical fable\, a white-collar black comedy\, and a stylistic tour de force blending elements of abstraction\, cubism\, mid-century modernism\, and visual sight gags. One of the most visually distinctive and funny graphic novels in recent memory\, Dogtangle is also underpinned with a deep mistrust of corporate and cultural hegemony\, cementing its relevance in our increasingly oligarchal times. \nMax Huffman is a Chicago-based cartoonist whose work synthesizes absurd comedy\, retro illustration and geometric abstraction into a frenzied\, writhing mass. His comics Them-Shaped Clouds and Cover Not Final have been nominated for Small Press Expo’s Ignatz Awards. As an illustrator\, his commercial clients include Doughboys\, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard\, and The New York Times. Dogtangle is his first graphic novel. \nAdam Griffiths is a cartoonist and arts administrator based in the Washington\, DC area.  Between exhibiting his art at various DMV region galleries and tabling his comics around the country\, he authored “Washington White\,” a surrealistic graphic novel reimagining his grandmother’s landmark Civil Rights case as a science-fiction spy thriller. In 2022\, Griffiths opened DwightMess\, a comics ‘compound’ in his Silver Spring\, MD home that includes several  gallery spaces\, screen-printing workshop\, Riso studio\, and an extensive library of comics\, zines and periodicals. DwightMess has mounted over 25 exhibitions since opening\, sponsors an annual artist residency program\, hosts a regularly-convening comic book readers’ club\, organizes an artists’ summer retreat program in West Virginia and has thrice hosted the StoryBox Comics Fair\, a 2-day mini-convention for area creators to showcase their artwork to the general public. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \n\nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9798875001291 \nThis is an in-person event.
