SUMMARY:Storytime: Courtney Pippin-Mathur for Dinosaur Days
DESCRIPTION:Izzy Rae has quite the imagination\, and she’s certainly not afraid to show everybody how wild and ferocious it can get. She starts the day rummaging through her closet for the perfect dinosaur attire\, because for Izzy Rae\, every day is DINOSAUR DAY! \nIzzy Rae doesn’t chew her food as a ferocious dinosaur\, she CHOMPS! Instead of stepping down the stairs or along the sidewalk\, she STOMPS! And wouldn’t you know it\, when she is reading signs\, she simply doesn’t read\, she ROARS! Izzy Rae has so much fun being a dinosaur throughout the day\, but there is only one thing better than a dinosaur chomping\, stomping and roaring. And that is TWO dinosaurs chomping\, stomping\, and roaring! \nDinosaur Days is the ultimate celebration of childhood and showcase of the tenacity of a child’s imagination. Izzy Rae conveys her love of dinosaurs through vibrant costumes and funny ways of doing ordinary things like eating\, walking\, and reading. Young readers will laugh out loud at her hilarious encounters with family and friends. \nCourtney Pippin-Mathur was raised in the wilds of East Texas\, where she never saw a live dinosaur. SUMMARY:Keya Chatterjee for The Revolution Will Not be Rated G
DESCRIPTION:In 2042 Washington\, D.C.\, the United States has fractured into two starkly divided worlds: Uplands\, where the elite\, wealthy\, and predominantly white hold power\, and Lowlands\, where the marginalized are abandoned to fend for themselves. \nAria Petros\, a fearless organizer for the underground resistance collective Expectus\, must lead a desperate mission to protect her people as a catastrophic hurricane barrels toward the eastern seaboard. But the fight for survival is only the beginning—Aria soon realizes that the only way to dismantle the corrupt Upland regime is to infiltrate it from within. \nHer best chance? Neil Rao\, a high school flame she hasn’t seen in years—now the golden boy of Upland and son of the most powerful woman in government. Trusting him could mean salvation. Falling for him again could mean ruin. \nAs Hurricane Eamon tears through the Atlantic coast\, Aria and Neil are thrust into a battle far greater than the storm itself—one that will determine the fate of a divided nation. In the wreckage\, they must navigate treachery\, desire\, and the weight of revolution—before it’s too late. \nKeya Chatterjee is executive director of Free DC and co-founder of Freedom Trainers. She is an avid reader\, an author\, and an activist for climate justice and democracy. Keya is committed to imagining and creating a thriving and inclusive future full of joy and caring. She started her career at NASA and was Executive Director of the US Climate Action Network for almost a decade\, where she was a key voice in civil society for strengthening the Paris Climate Agreement and the Inflation Reduction Act. Keya also served two terms as a hyper local elected official in Washington\, DC\, where she lives with her husband and son. She previously published a nonfiction book\, The Zero Footprint Baby: How to Save the Planet While Raising a Healthy Baby\, and op-eds in many outlets including Newsweek\, Reuters\, and Huffington Post. \nNadine Bloch is an outside-the-box activist artist\, political community organizer\, strategic nonviolent actionista and the Training Director for Beautiful Trouble. Her work explores the potent intersection of art and politics\, where creative cultural resistance is not only effective political action\, but also a powerful way to reclaim agency over our own lives\, fight oppressive systems\, and invest in our communities — all while having more fun than the other side! \n  \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9798991413435 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Karen Palmer for She's Under Here
DESCRIPTION:“Once upon a time\, I disappeared.” So begins Karen Palmer’s harrowing and redemptive memoir\, She’s Under Here. \nIn 1989\, shortly after her second marriage\, Palmer and her new husband quit their jobs without notice. They pulled her two young daughters out of school and buckled them into the rear seat of a used car purchased with cash. The trunk was packed with clothing and toys\, pillows and blankets\, four place settings\, one pot\, one pan\, and a sack that contained every penny they had. Living with the fear of Palmer’s dangerous ex-husband had become untenable: This was DIY witness protection. \nIn this searingly honest and heart-wrenching account\, Palmer examines why she ended up trapped\, how she escaped\, and the ongoing perils of life constructed around a false identity. She ruthlessly explores the lines between desire and fear\, victim and perpetrator\, captivity and freedom\, and exposes myriad aspects of what it means to make difficult choices as a woman\, when none of the options are good. She’s Under Here is a haunting meditation on themes of disappearance\, betrayal\, and private violence\, and it is utterly unforgettable. \nKaren Palmer is a Pushcart Prize winner and has received grants from the NEA and Colorado Council on the Arts. She’s Under Here grew out of her award-winning essay “The Reader Is the Protagonist\,” first published in Virginia Quarterly Review and selected by Leslie Jamison for inclusion in Best American Essays 2017. More recently her short story “Birds of Paradise”  won the 2022 Emily Clark Balch Prize for Fiction. Her writing has appeared in The Rumpus\, The Kenyon Review\, Arts & Letters\, and Kalliope\, among others. She lives in Los Angeles. \nErin Palmer is a lawyer\, advocate\, and community builder dedicated to public and community service. She works at the national nonprofit Pro Bono Institute\, where she supports pro bono legal efforts that expand access to justice. Erin is deeply involved in her local community\, having served for six years as a neighborhood-level elected official and currently serving on the board of her local Main Street and as Chair of the Fair Budget Coalition’s executive committee. \nBefore working at Pro Bono Institute\, Erin ran a highly competitive campaign for DC Council Chair\, earning attention for her detailed DC Council Accountability Plan and her commitment to transparent\, people-powered governance. She has also served as an ethics lawyer for the federal Judiciary\, practiced as a litigation associate focused on pro bono efforts including asylum\, education access\, and youth justice reform\, supervised a law school human rights clinic\, and clerked for the DC Court of Appeals. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781643757544 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Storytime: Caroline Kusin Pritchard for The Day the Books Disappeared
DESCRIPTION:All-star authors Joanna Ho (Eyes That Kiss in the Corners) and Caroline Kusin Pritchard (The Keeper of Stories) team up with Caldecott Medalist and National Book Award Winner Dan Santat in this celebration of the freedom to read. \nArnold didn’t mean for the books to disappear—not exactly. It all started because he liked his book about airplanes best. Why would anyone want to read about tomatoes or ostriches or submarines (ew\, the worst!) when they could read about planes\, instead? \nWhen Arnold realizes—POOF!—he can make the other books vanish\, he goes a little too far. Before he knows it\, all the books are gone…including his. Can Arnold figure out how to bring them back before it’s too late? \nThis book about books celebrates themes of empathy\, interconnectedness\, and the value of diverse and differing perspectives. \nCaroline Kusin Pritchard is the author of many children’s books\, including Gitty and Kvetch\, Where is Poppy?\, and The Keeper of Stories\, which is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection and received three starred reviews. She co-hosts the Kidlit Happy Hour podcast with author Joanna Ho. Caroline has an MFA in writing for children and young adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts and lives in Northern Virginia with her husband and their four kiddos. SUMMARY:Immigration Detention Panel
DESCRIPTION:The United States has the most extensive immigration detention system in the world\, expanding from a capacity of less than 5\,000 detainees per day in the 1980s to 52\,000 by 2019. While the most vociferous anti-immigrant rhetoric may be attributed to Republicans\, US detention infrastructure has grown exponentially regardless of the political party in power as reports of abysmal detention conditions pile up. \nNancy Hiemstra and Deirdre Conlon provide a damning exposé of the ways immigration detention generates income. At the same time\, those detained are starved\, sickened\, and exploited as a matter of routine detention operations. Drawing on over a decade of research focusing on detention centers in New Jersey and New York\, the authors map public-private financial relationships and trace how detention contracts for food\, medical care\, and in-facility stores are fought over to the penny. By dissecting the inner workings of immigration detention\, they show a system governed by a capitalist logic that produces sickening and corrupting dependencies in communities across the US. \nComing at a pivotal social and political moment\, Immigration Detention Inc. makes the case for dismantling immigration detention regimes everywhere. \nNancy Hiemstra is a political geographer whose research focuses on US immigration enforcement policies. She is the author of Detain and Deport: The Chaotic U.S. Immigration Enforcement Regime and co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention. She is Associate Professor at Stony Brook University in Long Island\, New York\, US. \nDeirdre Conlon is a critical geographer working in the US and Britain. Her work focuses on how immigration and border controls are proliferating as they are monetized. She is co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention and Carceral Spaces: Mobility and Agency in Imprisonment and Migrant Detention. She is Associate Professor based at the University of Leeds. \nSetareh Ghandehari is the Advocacy Director for the Detention Watch Network\, a national coalition building power through collective advocacy\, grassroots organizing and strategic communications to abolish immigration detention in the United States. She works alongside other DWN staff and members to abolish immigration detention in the United States\, and has been involved in social justice movements for over 20 years. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9780745349466 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Christopher C. Gorham for Matisse at War
DESCRIPTION:In 1940\, with the Nazis sweeping through France\, Henri Matisse found himself at a personal and artistic crossroads. His 42-year marriage had ended\, he was gravely ill\, and after decades at the forefront of modern art\, he was beset by doubt. As scores of famous figures escaped the country\, Matisse took refuge in Nice\, with his companion\, Lydia Delectorskaya. By defiantly remaining\, Matisse was a source of inspiration for his nation. While enemy agents and Resistance fighters played cat-and-mouse in the alleyways of Nice\, Matisse’s son\, Jean\, engaged in sabotage efforts with the Allies. In Paris\, under the swastika\, Matisse’s estranged wife\, Amélie\, worked for the Communist underground. His beloved daughter\, Marguerite\, active in the French Resistance\, was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo\, sentenced to Ravensbruck concentration camp-and miraculously escaped when her train was halted by Allied bombs. His younger\, son\, Pierre helped Jewish artists escape to New York; even his teenaged grandson risked his life by defying the Germans and their Vichy collaborators. Amidst this chaos\, Matisse responded to the dark days of war by inventing a dazzling new paper technique that led to some of his most iconic pieces\, including The Fall of Icarus\, his profile of Charles De Gaulle\, Monsieur Loyal\, and his groundbreaking cut-out book\, Jazz. His wartime works were acts of resistance\, subtly patriotic and daringly new. Drawing on intimate letters and a multitude of other sources\, Christopher C. Gorham illuminates this momentous stage of Matisse’s life as never before\, revealing an artist on a journey of reinvention\, wrenching meaning from the suffering of war\, and holding up the light of human imagination against the torch of fascism to create some of the most exciting work of his career\, of the 20th century\, and in the history of art. \nChristopher C. Gorham is a lawyer\, educator\, and acclaimed author whose books include Matisse at War and The Confidante. He is a frequent speaker at conferences\, literary events\, colleges\, and book club gatherings. He currently lives in Boston and can be found online at ChristopherCGorham.com \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9780806544168 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Antonia Hylton for Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum
DESCRIPTION:In the tradition of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks\, this New York Times bestseller is a page-turning account of one of the nation’s last segregated asylums…”a book that left me breathless” (Clint Smith). \nFor centuries\, Black patients have been absent from our history books. Madness transports readers through the ninety-three-year history of Crownsville Hospital\, one of the last segregated asylums with surviving records and a campus that still stands to this day in Anne Arundel County\, Maryland. Antonia Hylton blends the intimate tales of patients and employees whose lives were shaped by Crownsville with a decade-worth of investigative research and archival documents. Madness chronicles the stories of Black families whose mental health suffered as they tried\, and sometimes failed\, to find safety and dignity. Hylton also grapples with her own family’s experiences with mental illness\, and the secrecy and shame that it reproduced for generations. \nAs Crownsville Hospital grew from an antebellum-style work camp to a tiny city sitting on 1\,500 acres\, the institution became a microcosm of America’s evolving battles over slavery\, racial integration\, and civil rights. Hylton traces the legacy of slavery to the treatment of Black people’s bodies and minds in our current mental healthcare system. It is a captivating and heartbreaking meditation on how America decides who is sick or criminal\, and who is worthy of our care or irredeemable. \nAntonia Hylton is a Peabody and Emmy-award winning journalist\, co-anchor of MSNBC / Weekend Primetime\, and the co-host of the hit podcast Southlake and Grapevine. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University\, where she received prizes for her investigative research on race\, mass incarceration and the history of psychiatry. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9781538723692 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Carolivia Herron for Thereafter Johnnie
DESCRIPTION:The Snowdon family stands as a pinnacle of Black excellence in Washington\, D.C.: educated\, affluent\, and influential. John Christopher\, the patriarch\, is revered by his medical students at Howard University. His wife\, Camille\, governs an elegant house overlooking Rock Creek Park and devotes herself to reading\, gardening\, and raising their three daughters—Cynthia\, Patricia\, and Eva. \nYears later\, when John Christopher’s granddaughter Johnnie comes to seek the truth about her own parentage\, she unveils a legacy of unspeakable family secrets tangled up in America’s original sin. What begins as a quest for identity spirals into an apocalyptic vision of a nation on the brink of ruin. \nBy turns a poetic epic\, a ghost story\, a historical saga\, and a chilling dystopian fable\, Thereafter Johnnie is a unique\, uniquely American\, fusion of myth and reality: an erotic\, horrifying\, and even hopeful reckoning. Editor Jeremy Davies says\, “It’s extremely ambitious. It takes in a whole bunch of registers and literary approaches\, from biblical to classical to poetic to supernatural and science-fictiony.” \nFor the Washingtonian\, Ike Allen says\, “Enigmatic and fable-like\, reviewers compared it to James Joyce’s take on Dublin\,” and the New York Times wrote that it “belonged in the company of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple\, Toni Morrison’s Beloved\, and Gloria Naylor’s Linden Hills.” \nCarolivia Herron is an African American Jewish author and scholar with her main interests in writing novels and children’s books\, and teaching epic literature\, African American studies\, Classics\, and multimedia storytelling. Currently she teaches Classics and English in the Howard University Department of Literature and Writing. She earned her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Pennsylvania. \nBefore coming to Howard\, she held professorial positions at Harvard\, Mount Holyoke\, California State\, Arizona State\, and William and Mary. Herron’s scholarship includes the Oxford edition of the Selected Works of Angelina Weld Grimké\, several essays on African American epic tradition\, and the influence of John Milton on African American culture. She has several books in press (Kindergarten Blues\, Grilled Cheese\, seasongs\, and Asenath and Our Song of Songs). \nThe play\, Pharsalia; or\, For Crying Out Loud\, commissioned by Theater J is her most recent work. Pharsalia links Lucan’s ancient Roman epic of the same name\, with Pharsalia Plantation in Virginia\, where Carolivia’s formerly enslaved ancestors lived. \nHer great-great-grandmother\, Mary Ann Lumpkin\, survived her enslaver and used his money to found Virginia Union University. The opera\, Let Freedom Sing: The Story of Marian Anderson (Bruce Adolphe composer) with Carolivia’s libretto was originally produced by the Washington National Opera and the Washington Performing Arts Society. It was restaged in 2023 by Mobile Opera in Alabama. Carolivia also hosts a weekly radio show\, Epic City\, on Takoma Radio. In addition\, she publishes works by Black Jews of Africa. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/p/books/thereafter-johnnie-carolivia-herron/292584 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Bethany Brookshire for Pests: How Humans Create Animal Villains
DESCRIPTION:An engrossing and revealing study of why we deem certain animals “pests” and others not—from cats to rats\, elephants to pigeons—and what this tells us about our own perceptions\, beliefs\, and actions\, as well as our place in the natural world \nA squirrel in the garden. A rat in the wall. A pigeon on the street. Humans have spent so much of our history drawing a hard line between human spaces and wild places. When animals pop up where we don’t expect or want them\, we respond with fear\, rage\, or simple annoyance. It’s no longer an animal. It’s a pest. \nAt the intersection of science\, history\, and narrative journalism\, Pests is not a simple call to look closer at our urban ecosystem. It’s not a natural history of the animals we hate. Instead\, this book is about us. It’s about what calling an animal a pest says about people\, how we live\, and what we want. It’s a story about human nature\, and how we categorize the animals in our midst\, including bears and coyotes\, sparrows and snakes. Pet or pest? In many cases\, it’s entirely a question of perspective. \nBethany Brookshire’s deeply researched and entirely entertaining book will show readers what there is to venerate in vermin\, and help them appreciate how these animals have clawed their way to success as we did everything we could to ensure their failure. In the process\, we will learn how the pests that annoy us tell us far more about humanity than they do about the animals themselves. \nBethany Brookshire is an award-winning freelance science journalist and author of the 2022 book Pests: How Humans Create Animal Villains. She has a Ph.D. in Physiology and Pharmacology. Brookshire writes on human-animal conflict\, ecology\, environmental science\, and neuroscience. She is fascinated by the way humans perceive the environment and their place in it. Her work has appeared in Science News\, Science News Explores\, The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, Slate\, The Guardian\, The Atlantic and other outlets. She is based in Washington\, D.C. \nDr. Kali Holder is a zoological pathologist\, science communicator\, and international nerd of mystery. SUMMARY:Jessie Sima for Snow Kid
DESCRIPTION:From the New York Times bestselling creator of Not Quite Narwhal\, Jessie Sima\, comes a “gentle\, reassuring” (Publishers Weekly\, starred review) wintery picture book about a snow kid finding out what it means to be themself! \nMeet Twig\, the snow kid! Like all snow kids\, Twig was made from many snowflakes\, twigs\, stones\, a crisp orange carrot\, and a very fine hat. What a wonderful thing it is to be Twig! Except…could they still be Twig if a strong breeze blows away their hat? As Twig chases after the hat\, more things keep changing\, and they keep growing and moving and talking. Is there still a way to go back to being Twig? \nMaybe not. But maybe there’s more than one way to be a snow person\, and it can be fun to walk and talk and grow and change. Twig can find snow people like them even as they’re still learning how to become Twig\, and that’s a wonderful thing! \n  \nJessie Sima is the author and illustrator of bestselling picture books\, including Not Quite Narwhal; Love\, Z; Hardly Haunted; and more. They grew up in a small town in southern New Jersey and now write and draw in a creaky house in New York state. When not making books\, Jessie can be found reading graphic novels\, watching scary movies\, and playing outside with dogs. SUMMARY:Maia Kobabe and Sarah Peitzmeier\, PhD for Breathe: Journeys to Healthy Binding
DESCRIPTION:A graphic guide to chest binding with real-life stories and research-backed advice from bestselling Gender Queer author MAIA KOBABE and University of Maryland professor SARAH PEITZMEIER. \nBreathe arose from the need for a resource for folks considering chest binding as gender-affirming care. Dr. Peitzmeier interviewed twenty-five people of different ages and backgrounds about their journeys with binding\, and then she and Kobabe combined excerpts from those interviews with evidence-based resources on binding into this extremely accessible guide. \nBreathe is both a practical resource for trans and nonbinary folks and an engaging and perspective-broadening read for anyone interested in what it means to be on a journey of expressing one’s gender in ways that are joyful\, healthy\, and affirming. \nMaia Kobabe (e/em/eir) is a nonbinary queer cartoonist\, a kpop fan\, a voracious reader\, and a daydreamer. You can learn an astonishing number of intimate details about em in GENDER QUEER: A MEMOIR (America’s most challenged book 2021-2023) and in eir short comics and writing published in The Nib\, The New Yorker\, The Washington Post\, NPR\, and Time Magazine. Maia’s second book is BREATHE: JOURNEYS TO HEALTHY BINDING with Dr Sarah Peitzmeier (2024) and eir third book will be a middle grade coming of age comic written with Swati “Lucky” Srikumar\, due out from Scholastic Graphix in 2026. Before setting out to work freelance full-time\, e worked for over ten years in libraries. In eir free time\, Maia practices taekwondo\, studies Spanish\, and makes zines. \nSarah Peitzmeier\, PhD (she/her) is an Associate Professor of Behavioral and Community Health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. Sarah is interested in the radical potential of research as an act of community care. Her ongoing research includes studies to improve how we support trans survivors of intimate partner violence\, how we prevent sexual assault on college campuses\, and how we co-create a world where gender-based violence and health inequity are unthinkable. She is co-author (with Maia Kobabe) of the graphic novel Breathe\, which is based on her research on chest binding in transmasculine individuals. When she is not doing research\, she is crafting\, reading fantasy novels\, or suing the federal government for unconstitutionally terminating her NIH funding for trans health research. Sarah received her PhD from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2017. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/88548/9780593855829 \nThis is an in-person event.
