Latine Representation in Literature

Join us this Latine Heritage Month as we discuss representation with authors across literary genres.

Anna Lapera is a mixed-race Guatemalan-American author and educator. Her debut upper middle grade novel, Mani Semilla Finds Her Quetzal Voice, was named one of the “Most Anticipated Middle Grade Reads of 2024” by the School Library Journal. She teaches middle school by day and writes stories about girls stepping into their power in the early hours of the morning. When she’s not writing or teaching, you can find her occasionally playing the drums or searching for the crispiest plátano frito in town. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her husband, two daughters and a rescue dog named Leo.

 

Letisha Marrero is the debut author of the acclaimed middle-grade novel, SALSA MAGIC, which was reviewed by The New York Times, and named one of Chicago Public Library’s middle-grade novels of 2023. She has been a writer and editor for more than 20 years across all media and genres. As a culture critic and entertainment journalist, she has written for Latina magazine, The Source, Vibe, NBC, Nickelodeon, and more. Of Puerto Rican and Black Dominican descent, Letisha hails from New York City by way of Southern California. Mom to a super dope human teenager and a majestic but moody blue-eyed dog, Letisha currently lives in Rockville.

 

Diana Rojas‘ debut fiction Litany of Saints: A Triptych was published by Arte Público Press in April 2024. A graduate of NYU, she has written in everything from large daily newspapers to niche newsletters. Diana grew up in Connecticut and New Jersey, has lived in five different countries and currently lives, taxed and unrepresented, in Washington, DC.

 

Ursula Villarreal-Moura was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She is the author of Math for the Self-Crippling, a flash fiction collection. Like Happiness is her debut novel.

 

Ofelia Montelongo is a bilingual writer from Mexico. She has an MBA in Strategic Leadership & an MA in Latin American Literature. Her work has been published in The RumpusLatino Book Review, Los Acentos Review, and elsewhere. She is the editor of the Latine Monsters issue at Barrelhouse. She currently teaches at the University of Maryland and at George Washington University and she is a PEN/Faulkner writer in residence, a Macondista & a PEN America Emerging Voices Fellow. Tin House, VONA, Key West Seminar alumna.

This is an in-person event. Seated capacity at People’s Book is 50 patrons. Standing room is an option. All events are first-come, first-served seating. Accessible seating is always available.
