Halloween at People’s Book (ft. Alex Travis for The Payback Girls)

October 25, 2025 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Free

Staring at 4pm: celebrate Halloween with fun activities from crafts to a murder mystery-themed scavenger hunt, followed by a discussion of Alex Travis’ latest release The Payback Girls. Plus, if you come dressed as either your favorite literary crime solver or criminal, you could win a prize!

About the book:

After the basketball star and most popular guy in school is found bloodied and unconscious in the locker room, his three jilted exes become suspects…and the investigation turns from assault to murder. John Tucker Must Die meets One of Us Is Lying in a gripping, page-turning debut thriller.

When the HS basketball star is found bloodied and unconscious in the boy’s locker room after the big game, Nate Walker lands in the ICU fighting for his life—and Meghan and Nate’s two ex-girlfriends become the prime suspects.

The three teens have a tense relationship at best—and they each have their own motive for lashing out at Nate. But Meghan, Bria, and Robin are determined to clear their names amid escalating danger and suspicion…even if it means forming an uncomfortable alliance to uncover the truth.

The only problems? Meghan doesn’t remember everything that happened the night of the incident and the more clues they uncover, the more each looks responsible.

Then Nate dies of his injuries. Who is guilty of murder?

Alex Travis is a school psychologist by day, author by night. Alex earned a Ph.D., and procrastinated her dissertation by writing her forthcoming books.  As a Black woman, she hopes to add to the growing canon of great YA work about Black teenagers. She lives in Virginia.
Christina Ferko grew up in a family of seven girls, including her identical twin sister—who is also an author. Before writing, she dreamed of running away and joining a circus. She even learned how to eat and breathe fire but now spends her time happily writing at home instead. Christina lives in Maryland with her husband and two kids, along with their four cats and one wild corgi.
