SUMMARY:Vicki Johnson for "Molly's Tuxedo"
DESCRIPTION:About the Book:  \nMolly wants to look her best for picture day at her school\, and what looks better than a tux? Molly’s school picture day is coming up\, and she wants to have a perfect portrait taken to hang on their wall. Her mom has picked out a nice dress for her\, but Molly knows from experience that dresses are trouble. They have tight places and hard-to-reach zippers\, and worst of all\, no pockets! Luckily\, she has the perfect thing to save picture day- her brother’s old tuxedo! But mom doesn’t want her to wear a tuxedo in the photo; she thinks Molly looks best in the dress. Can Molly find the courage to follow her heart and get her mom to realize just how awesome she’d look in a tux? This book highlights a gender nonconforming main character and is published in partnership with GLAAD to accelerate LGBTQ inclusivity and acceptance. \nAbout the Author:  \nVicki Johnson was born and raised in rural Georgia where she spent her days reading\, listening to the radio\, and sweating. She is a Lambda Literary Fellow\, a proud first-generation graduate of Smith College and Emory Law School\, and a student at Vermont College of Fine Arts where she is pursuing her MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults. Vicki lives in a historic log cabin in West Virginia where she tends to her three cats\, two dogs\, and one college kid. She never wears dresses. Find out more about her at vickijohnsonwrites.com. \n  \nIn person event. \nNo RSVP required. \n

SUMMARY:Brendan Ballou for "Plunder: Private Equity's Plan to Pillage America"
DESCRIPTION:About the Book:\nPrivate equity surrounds us. Firms like Blackstone\, Carlyle\, and KKR are among the largest employers in America and hold assets that rival those of small countries. Yet few understand what these firms are or how they work. \nIn Plunder\, Brendan Ballou explains how private equity has reshaped American business by raising prices\, reducing quality\, cutting jobs\, and shifting resources from productive to unproductive parts of the economy. Ballou vividly illustrates how many private equity firms buy up retailers\, medical practices\, prison services\, nursing-home chains\, and mobile-home parks\, among other businesses\, using little of their own money to do it and avoiding debt and liability for their actions. Forced to take on huge debts and pay extractive fees\, companies purchased by private equity firms are often left bankrupt\, or shells of their former selves\, with consequences to communities that long depended on them. \n“A powerful\, maddening account of some of the chief drivers of inequality and immiseration in the world’s richest economy.” —Kirkus \n“Private-equity firms don’t just transform our economy: they co-opt and compromise our government and our democracy. As few other people can\, Ballou has shown how private equity has been so phenomenally successful in advancing its agenda at every level of government\, and how government has been so tremendously solicitous of private equity. For anyone who wants to understand what’s happening in our economy and our democracy\, Plunder is required reading.” —Russ Feingold\, former senator & president of the American Constitution Society \nAbout the Author:\nBrendan Ballou is a federal prosecutor and served as Special Counsel for Private Equity in the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. Previously\, he worked in private practice\, and before that\, in the National Security Division of the Justice Department\, where he advised the White House on counterterrorism and other policies. He graduated from Columbia University and Stanford Law School. \nEvent will be in person.

SUMMARY:Claudia Friddell for "Cool Off and Ride! A Trolley Trip to Beat the Heat"
DESCRIPTION:About the Book:\nThis historical picture book about 1930s Baltimore residents beating the heat the old-fashioned way—by riding a trolley!— is filled with fascinating information on public transit and staying cool before the advent of air conditioning. \nEveryone in Baltimore is hot and sticky\, from little Hazel playing on the slide to the grandma knitting on the porch. So when evening comes\, they all jump at the chance for a little “cool off and ride.” The whole neighborhood–from the Taylor twins to Grandpa\, and even the dog!—piles onto a breezy homemade roller coaster\, a city trolley! \nIn this charming\, rhythmic romp\, Claudia Friddell and Jenn Harney take us back to a time before air conditioning when you had to cool off any way you could. And the Cool Off and Ride Program was certainly a popular way! More than 8\,000 people rode the trolleys every evening in the summer. Taking the streetcar brought the whole neighborhood together\, and everyone’s fares helped keep the Baltimore streetcars running. This STEAM title is a terrific read-aloud that will also educate kids about weather and the history of transit in the United States. \n“Friddell’s songlike text captures the city’s various characters on this summer day…All are invited to “cool off and ride” in a repeated refrain. Retro illustrations capture an atmosphere of hot weather in an old-school neighborhood and show a multiracial cast of characters finding a variety of ways to cope with the weather. While the premise here will undoubtedly have local appeal\, any child who has experienced summer heat will understand the need to escape it and enjoy this rhythmic\, lyrical tale…A gently humorous depiction of a city’s effort to beat the heat.” —Kirkus Reviews \nAbout the Author:\nClaudia Friddell is the author of several children’s books\, including To the Front!: Clara Barton Braves the Battle of Antietam\, Grace Banker and Her Hello Girls Answer the Call: The Heroic Story of WWI Telephone Operators\, and Saving Lady Liberty: Joseph Pulitzer’s Fight for the Statue of Liberty. She has worked with children throughout her career\, which included being a therapist\, a school counselor\, and a teacher. \nEvent will be in person.

SUMMARY:Dana Maier for "Skip to the Fun Parts: Cartoons and Complaints About the Creative Process"
DESCRIPTION:About the Book:\nThe perfect companion for anyone struggling to keep their sense of humor while staring at a blank page\, Skip to the Fun Parts offers next-to-zero creative advice\, and is instead filled with cartoons\, commiserations\, and jokes about the creative process. \nLike you\, syndicated cartoonist Dana Maier wants a creativity shortcut—a magical fairy who will both come up with brilliant ideas and grant the energy and discipline to churn them out. This book is not that magical shortcut—you won’t find stirring literary quotes or a foolproof system for sparking inspiration here—but it does provide commiseration\, comics\, jokes\, and reflections about the often-painful act of making something original. \nDrawing on her experience as a cartoonist for The New Yorker and other publications\, Maier explores topics such as embracing the agony of the creative process\, how the pandemic has affected creative people in different ways\, and the power of channeling your inner six-year-old. While more traditional creativity guides often make readers feel judged\, Skip to the Fun Parts offers amusing insights about the realities of the creative process—highly entertaining for artists of all kinds and 100% advice-free! \n“Of all the books I’ve ever read on the creative process (and I’ve read every one)\, this is by far the most useful\, for its ability to remind me why we make art in the first place. I know I will turn to it again and again whenever I need to re-ignite the spark of childlike joy that fuels creativity.” —Mari Andrew\, New York Times bestselling author of Am I There Yet? and My Inner Sky \n“A funny\, irreverent sendup of creative self-help and a comforting depiction of the agony and ecstasy in the creative process.” —Austin Kleon\, New York Times bestselling author of STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST \nAbout the Authors:\n\nDana Jeri Maier is an artist\, syndicated cartoonist\, and frequent contributor to The New Yorker’s “Shouts and Murmurs.” She lives in Washington\, D.C.\nTim Kreider has written for The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, The Week\, The Men’s Journal\, and Nerve.com. His popular comic strip\, The Pain—When Will It End?\, ran in alternative weeklies for twelve years and has been collected in three books by Fantagraphics. He divides his time between New York City and an undisclosed location on the Chesapeake Bay.\n\nEvent will be in person.

SUMMARY:Emily Ettlinger for "Skeleanor The Decomposer"
DESCRIPTION:About the Book:\nAn instantly charming and vivid chapter-book graphic novel\, starring a music-obsessed skeleton\, Skeleanor\, and her quest to find her sound (and her confidence) by debut creator Emily Ettlinger. \nSkeleanor loves music more than life itself. There’s just one problem: She has a bit more rattle than rhythm at the moment. No matter what type of instrument she plays—from the fiddle to the xylobone—she always seems to scare the people of Little Casketon away. But with the Little Casketon Summershine festival coming up\, and the town band missing a player\, maybe Skeleanor (along with the help of her best friend\, Batima) could show people her skills and finally take center stage. \nHilarious and heartfelt\, Skeleanor the Decomposer by debut author and illustrator Emily Ettlinger is a story about chasing your passions no matter what other people say. Sometimes\, all you need is a dream\, your friends\, and a little music. \nAbout the Author:\nEmily Ettlinger is an artist from almost-DC\, Maryland. When she’s not drawing\, you can find her working on one of an infinite number of sewing\, furniture\, or toy-making projects. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in illustration. Skeleanor the Decomposer is her first graphic novel. Visit her online at emiett.com. \nEvent will be in person.

SUMMARY:Adam Lazarus for "The Wingmen: The Unlikely\, Unusual\, Unbreakable Friendship Between John Glenn and Ted Williams"
DESCRIPTION:About the Book:\nThe untold story of the unique fifty-year friendship between two American icons: John Glenn\, the unassailable pioneer of space exploration and Ted Williams\, indisputably the greatest hitter in baseball history. \nIt was 1953\, the Korean War in full throttle\, when two men—already experts in their fields—crossed the fabled 38th Parallel into Communist airspace aboard matching Panther jets. John Glenn was an ambitious operations officer with fifty-nine World War II combat missions under his belt. His wingman was Ted Williams\, the two-time American League Triple Crown winner who\, at the pinnacle of his career\, had been inexplicably recalled to active service in the United States Marine Corps. Together\, the affable flier and the notoriously tempestuous left fielder soared into North Korea\, creating a death-defying bond. Although\, over the next half century\, their contrasting lives were challenged by exhilarating highs and devastating lows\, that bond would endure. \nThrough unpublished letters\, unit diaries\, declassified military records\, manuscripts\, and new and illuminating interviews\, The Wingmen reveals an epic and intimate portrait of two heroes—larger-than-life and yet ineffably human\, ordinary men who accomplished the extraordinary. At its heart\, this was a conflicted friendship that found commonality in mutual respect—throughout the perils of war\, sports dominance\, scientific innovation\, cutthroat national politics\, the burden of celebrity\, and the meaning of bravery. Now\, author Adam Lazaraus sheds light on a largely forgotten chapter in these legends’ lives—as singular individuals\, inspiring patriots\, and eventually\, however improbable\, profoundly close friends. \n“In many ways\, John Glenn and Ted Williams were dissimilar. But they shared the essential traits of bravery\, loyalty\, devotion to excellence\, and despite political differences\, authentic patriotism. Carefully researched and skillfully rendered\, this is the compelling story of the enduring bond between two genuine American heroes.” —Bob Costas\, award-winning sportscaster on The Wingmen\n  \n“The detail in this book gave me a whole new perspective on the bond between John Glenn and Ted Williams\, one forged through combat missions in Korea and which lasted the rest of their lives. Adam Lazarus captures not just a great American friendship\, but also a great American ideal: that for all that makes two people like John Glenn and Ted Williams different\, there are special bonds that unite us through service and patriotism.” —Mark Kelly\, U.S. Senator\, astronaut\, U.S. Navy combat pilot on The Wingmen \nAbout the Author:\nAdam Lazarus is an author specializing in nonfiction books featuring iconic and compelling figures in American history\, including Chasing Greatness\, Super Bowl Monday\, Best of Rivals\, and Hail to the Redskins: Gibbs\, the Diesel\, the Hogs\, and the Glory Days of D.C.’s Football Dynasty. His writing has appeared in USA Today\, ESPN the Magazine\, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution\, among other publications. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Kenyon College and a master’s degree in professional writing from Carnegie Mellon University. He lives in Atlanta\, Georgia\, with his wife and twin boys\, and can be found online at AdamLazarusBooks.com. \nEvent will be in person.

We’re usually closed on Mondays but will be opening the store up just for us. We’d also like to organize a book donation for classrooms; if you feel inclined\, you can buy a book to contribute! Please let us know if you’re coming with the RSVP below so we know how much pizza to order. We’ll order at least one vegan one for those (like Sefi) with dairy allergies. \nHope you can make it!

SUMMARY:William Robin for "On Minimalism" with Alex Ross
DESCRIPTION:William Robin discusses his book On Minimalism with Alex Ross.\n\n\nA revisionist history of minimalism’s transformative rise\, through the voices of the musicians who created it. \nWhen composers like Philip Glass and Steve Reich began creating hypnotically repetitive music in the 1960s\, it upended the world of American composition. But minimalism was more than a classical phenomenon—minimalism changed everything. Its static harmonies and groovy pulses swept through the broader avant-garde landscape\, informing the work of Yoko Ono and Brian Eno\, John and Alice Coltrane\, Pauline Oliveros and Julius Eastman\, and many others. \nOn Minimalism moves from the style’s beginnings in psychedelic counterculture through its present-day influences on ambient jazz\, doom metal\, and electronic music. The editors look beyond the major figures to highlight crucial and diverse voices—especially women\, people of color\, and LGBTQ+ musicians—that have shaped the genre. Featuring more than a hundred rare historical sources\, On Minimalism curates this history anew\, documenting one of the most important musical movements of our time.\n\nWilliam Robin is an associate professor of musicology at the University of Maryland’s School of Music. His research and writing untangle the complex cultural and institutional histories of contemporary classical music in the United States. Robin contributes to The New York Times and hosts the podcast Sound Expertise.\n\n\nAlex Ross\, a Washington DC native\, has been the music critic of The New Yorker since 1996. He is the author of the books The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century\, Listen to This\, and Wagnerism: Art and Politics in the Shadow of Music.\n\n\nThis event will be in person.
