SUMMARY:José Alaniz for "Puro Pinche True Fictions"
DESCRIPTION:José Alaniz\, professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Department of Cinema and Media Studies (adjunct) at the University of Washington\, Seattle\, has published academic books on Russian/Eastern European comics\, disability in comics and superheroes. He also makes comics\, including for the collections The Phantom Zone and Other Stories (Amatl Comix\, 2020)\, The Compleat Moscow Calling (Amatl\, 2023) and Puro Pinche True Fictions (2023\, FlowerSong Press). \nThe hybrid book collects short stories and comics\, mostly set in the Rio Grande Valley along the Texas/Mexico border. The stories reflect the author’s upbringing in this region as a second-generation Mexican-American\, at times fusing folk beliefs with Bradbury-style science fiction. For example\, “Tamales” sets the immigration narrative on Mars in 2063\, when a migrant family makes the crossing in search of work via (malfunctioning) rocket. \nOther stories\, like “Genoveva” and “Where You Stop the Story\,” retell painful family episodes going back years and generations. The comics section\, “Electric Youth\,” recounts incidents from Alaniz’s childhood in South Texas\, some of them told in Spanglish. These range from nostalgic (like one showing how common and pleasant it used to be to cross the river to Reynosa\, Mexico for family outings) to funny/gross (the author’s memory of stepping on a nail) to self-flagellating (the reimagining of ethnic self-loathing through a Star Wars metaphor). This collection will appeal to readers with an interest in contemporary Chicano fiction and comics.

SUMMARY:Joann Malone & Eliza King for "Tears Become Rain: Stories of Transformation and Healing"
DESCRIPTION:32 mindfulness practitioners around the world reflect on encountering the extraordinary teachings of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh\, who passed away in January 2022\, exploring themes of coming home to ourselves\, healing from grief and loss\, facing fear\, and building community and belonging. \nSome moments change our lives. We experience wonder and relief when we realize we can be okay\, just as we are. How do we then integrate these transformative moments into our daily life? Tears Become Rain is a collection of such stories\, with one common inspiration: the teachings of mindfulness and compassion offered by the most influential meditation teacher of the past century\, the Buddhist monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh\, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Dr. Martin Luther King. \nThe stories encapsulate the benefits of mindfulness practice through the experiences of ordinary people from 16 countries around the world. Some of the contributors were direct students of Thich Nhat Hanh for decades and are meditation teachers in their own right\, while others are relatively new on the path. Eliza’s story is about her life-long quest to arrive at a sense of peace about her visual impairment\, both how her eyes appear to others and how she sees the world\, and the powerful role that Mindfulness practice played in that journey. Joann’s story traces her first connection with Thich Nhat Hanh to her action as a nun against Dow Chemical during the Vietnam War\, through her struggles with alcoholism and the transformation from blaming her father into love and compassion for him through mindfulness meditation. \nASL interpretation will be provided.

SUMMARY:Erica Turnipseed for "Bigger Than Me"
DESCRIPTION:About the Book: \nChildren discover the impact they can have when they band together in this picture book ode to how solidarity lifts everyone up. \nSiblings Luna and Zion are feeling a bit overwhelmed. Big words keep rushing at them: Homelessness. Pandemic. Inequality. Recession. Unemployment. \nThey don’t understand the words\, but grown-ups do\, and the siblings can see how upset the words make them. Wanting to understand the words themselves\, Luna and Zion spell them out with building blocks\, but the words’ weight sends the blocks tumbling. So they recruit other kids to help them. Many hands make light work\, and as the words are constructed from any materials the children can find\, the words themselves grow lighter\, and change: Equality. Kindness. Compassion. Liberty. Democracy. Freedom. Hope. \nThe words are still big\, but not as heavy—ones everyone can carry\, if we carry them together. \nAbout the Author: \nErica Simone Turnipseed is a teacher\, social justice activist\, novelist\, and essayist\, as well as the author of Bigger Than Me. Originally from Brooklyn\, she holds BA and MA degrees in anthropology from Yale and Columbia\, respectively\, and now lives in Washington\, DC.

SUMMARY:"Frankly Feminist" A discussion with Lilith Magazine and The New Synagogue Project
DESCRIPTION:Today\, we need feminist fiction more than ever—to connect us to our past and help us dream about a feminist future. SUMMARY:Congressman Jamie Raskin for Unthinkable: Trauma\, Truth\, and the Trials of American Democracy
DESCRIPTION:In this searing memoir\, Congressman and Takoma Park resident Jamie Raskin tells the story of the forty-five days at the start of 2021 that permanently changed his life—and his family’s—as he confronted the painful loss of his son to suicide\, lived through the violent failed insurrection and attack on the Capitol\, and led the impeachment effort to hold Donald Trump accountable for inciting the political violence. \n“Extraordinary . . . [an] astonishing story of tragedy and redemption. . . . May this book and Tommy’s example inspire us all to rescue our gravely beleaguered democracy.”—Guardian \nOn December 31\, 2020\, Tommy Raskin\, the only son of Maryland congressman Jamie Raskin\, tragically took his own life. Seven days later\, on January 6\, 2021\, Congressman Raskin returned to the House to help certify the 2020 presidential election results\, when violent insurrectionists led by right-wing extremists stormed the U.S. Capitol. As a reeling nation mourned the loss of life and lamented the injuries of more than 140 police officers in the attack\, Congressman Raskin\, a constitutional law professor\, was called upon to channel his overwhelming grief—both personal and professional—into leading the second impeachment effort against President Trump. \nIn Unthinkable\, Congressman Raskin discusses this unimaginable convergence of personal and public trauma. Going inside the Capitol\, he recounts the horror of January 6\, a day that he and other Democrats had spent months preparing for under the correct assumption that they would encounter an attempted electoral coup—not against a president but for one. And yet\, on January 6\, he faced the one thing he had failed to anticipate: mass political violence designed to block Joe Biden’s election. With an inside account of leading the team that prosecuted the outgoing president in the Senate\, Congressman Raskin reveals just how close we came to losing our democracy while reckoning with the loss of his brilliant\, remarkable son whose values and memory continually inspired the congressman to confront the dark impulses unleashed by Donald Trump. \nThis is a free in store event. Please tell us coming by RSVPing below so can be sure to have enough books for you! \nASL interpretation will be provided.

SUMMARY:Farah Ali for "The River\, the Town"
DESCRIPTION:Come listen to author Farah Ali discuss her newest release “The River\, The Town\,” moderated by Hannah Greico. \nFarah Ali is from Karachi\, Pakistan. Her short stories have been anthologized in Best Small Fictions and the Pushcart Prize where it has also received special mention. “People Want to Live” (McSweeney’s) is her first collection. \nHannah Grieco is the editor of ALREADY GONE (Alan Squire Publishing\, November 2023) and AND IF THAT MOCKINGBIRD DON’T SING (Alternating Current Press\, 2022). She is an editor of novels and prose collections at Alan Squire Publishing\, in Bethesda\, Maryland. Her own writing can be found in a wide variety of publications\, including the Washington Post\, Al Jazeera\, Brevity\, Fairy Tale Review\, Poet Lore\, and more. Find her at www.hgrieco.com. \n  \nIn the rural town in Pakistan where Baadal grows up\, children are named like talismans to sustain life and ward off unhappiness. At seventeen\, Baadal has come to understand why his parents gave him that name\, with hopes that their Big River will one day flow wide again\, and their thirst will be quenched after years of drought. But in the final year of his schooling\, abundance seems impossibly far away. As his parents’ marriage—full of rage\, despair\, and often violence—reaches a breaking point\, the only comfort Baadal can afford is a budding kinship with Meena\, a divorced older woman he meets on the banks of the drying river. \nMeena has only just escaped her abusive husband\, but her resistance to remarry soon gives way to the promise of stability and companionship that Baadal offers. Together\, they leave the Town in search of greater fortunes in the City. But even strong-willed\, independent Meena finds herself bowed by the strain of Badaal’s punishing work schedule\, her struggling beauty parlor\, and the tension with Baadal’s mother\, Raheela\, who fights for control of her son as she seeks to leave behind a life of disappointments and discover a freedom she’s never known. \nTold in rotating perspectives spanning from 1966 to 1998\, THE RIVER\, THE TOWN is an intimate portrait of a family unraveling in the throes of indigence\, and a tribute to the wounded love that keeps them tethered to each other. With stark and candid prose\, Farah Ali traces one family’s fortunes to illuminate the relentless cycle of inequity\, juxtaposing the tragic and grueling realities of poverty with the enduring struggle for compassion and humanity. \n  \nThis event will be in person.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Emily Ettlinger
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Halloween Month\, it’s Skeleanor the Decomposer!\nMeet local graphic novelist Emily Ettlinger. \nAbout the Book: \nAn instantly charming and vivid chapter-book graphic novel\, starring a music-obsessed skeleton\, Skeleanor\, and her quest to find her sound (and her confidence) by debut creator Emily Ettlinger. \nSkeleanor loves music more than life itself. There’s just one problem: She has a bit more rattle than rhythm at the moment. No matter what type of instrument she plays—from the fiddle to the xylobone—she always seems to scare the people of Little Casketon away. But with the Little Casketon Summershine festival coming up\, and the town band missing a player\, maybe Skeleanor (along with the help of her best friend\, Batima) could show people her skills and finally take center stage. \nHilarious and heartfelt\, Skeleanor the Decomposer (published by Penguin Workshop) by debut author and illustrator Emily Ettlinger is a story about chasing your passions no matter what other people say. Sometimes\, all you need is a dream\, your friends\, and a little music. \nAbout the Author: \nEmily Ettlinger is a Maryland-based illustrator\, cartoonist\, and product designer and Rhode Island School of Design 2016 graduate.\nVisit her at https://www.emiett.com \n  \nRSVP and registration on Takoma Park Library website.

SUMMARY:Robert Jones for "The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy..." - ASL interpreter present
DESCRIPTION:About the Book: \nBeginning with contemporary efforts to reckon with the legacy of white supremacy in America\, Jones returns to the fateful year when a little-known church doctrine emerged that shaped the way five centuries of European Christians would understand the “discovered” world and the people who populated it. Along the way\, he shows us the connections between Emmett Till and the Spanish conquistador Hernando De Soto in the Mississippi Delta\, between the lynching of three Black circus workers in Duluth and the mass execution of thirty-eight Dakota men in Mankato\, and between the murder of 300 African Americans during the burning of Black Wall Street in Tulsa and the Trail of Tears. \nFrom this vantage point\, Jones shows how the enslavement of Africans was not America’s original sin but\, rather\, the continuation of acts of genocide and dispossession flowing from the first European contact with Native Americans. These deeds were justified by people who embraced the 15th century Doctrine of Discovery: the belief that God had designated all territory not inhabited or controlled by Christians as their new promised land. \nThis reframing of American origins explains how the founders of the United States could build the philosophical framework for a democratic society on a foundation of mass racial violence—and why this paradox survives today in the form of white Christian nationalism. Through stories of people navigating these contradictions in three communities\, Jones illuminates the possibility of a new American future in which we finally fulfill the promise of a pluralistic democracy. \nAbout the Author: \nRobert P. Jones is the president and founder of Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and a leading scholar and commentator on religion and politics. Jones writes regularly on politics\, culture\, and religion for The Atlantic\, TIME\, and Religion News Service. He is frequently featured in major national media\, such as MSNBC\, CNN\, NPR\, The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and others. He holds a PhD in religion from Emory University and a MDiv from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the author of White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity\, which won a 2021 American Book Award\, and The End of White Christian America\, which won the 2019 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. He writes a regular Substack newsletter at RobertPJones.substack.com. \n  \nThis event is in person. An ASL interpreter will be present.

SUMMARY:Katie Wells and Declan Cullen for "Disrupting D.C."
DESCRIPTION:The first city to fight back against Uber\, Washington\, D.C.\, was also the first city where such resistance was defeated. It was here that the company created a playbook for how to deal with intransigent regulators and to win in the realm of local politics. The city already serves as the nation’s capital. Now\, D.C. is also the blueprint for how Uber conquered cities around the world—and explains why so many embraced the company with open arms. \nDrawing on interviews with gig workers\, policymakers\, Uber lobbyists\, and community organizers\, Disrupting D.C. demonstrates that many share the blame for lowering the nation’s hopes and dreams for what its cities could be. In a sea of broken transit\, underemployment\, and racial polarization\, Uber offered a lifeline. But at what cost? \nThis is not the story of one company and one city. Instead\, Disrupting D.C. offers a 360-degree view of an urban America in crisis. Uber arrived promising a new future for workers\, residents\, policymakers\, and others. Ultimately\, Uber’s success and growth was never a sign of urban strength or innovation but a sign of urban weakness and low expectations about what city politics can achieve. Understanding why Uber rose reveals just how far the rest of us have fallen. \n\n\nDr. Katie Wells is a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University.\nDr. Declan Cullen is assistant professor of geography at George Washington University.\nNancy Scola is a Washington D.C.-based journalist and magazine writer whose work focuses on the intersections of technology\, politics\, and public policy. She is a contributing writer at POLITICO Magazine.\n\nThis event will be in person.

SUMMARY:Tricia Elam Walker for "Nana Akua Goes to School"\, "Dream Street"
DESCRIPTION:Come to a storytime with Tricia Elam Walker\, featuring her books Dream Street and Nana Akua Goes to School. \nAbout the books: \nIt is Grandparents Day at Zura’s elementary school\, and the students are excited to introduce their grandparents and share what makes them special. Aleja’s grandfather is a fisherman. Bisou’s grandmother is a dentist. But Zura’s Nana\, who is her favorite person in the world\, looks a little different from other grandmas. Nana Akua was raised in Ghana\, and\, following an old West African tradition\, has tribal markings on her face. Worried that her classmates will be scared of Nana–or worse\, make fun of her–Zura is hesitant to bring her to school. Nana Akua knows what to do\, though. With a quilt of traditional African symbols and a bit of face paint\, Nana Akua is able to explain what makes her special\, and to make all of Zura’s classmates feel special\, too. \n  \nWelcome to Dream Street–the best street in the world!  Jump rope with Azaria–can you Double Dutch one leg at a time?  Dream big with Ede and Tari\, who wish to create a picture book together one day. Say hello with Mr. Sidney\, a retired mail carrier who greets everyone with the words\, “Don’t wait to have a great day. Create one!” On Dream Street\, love between generations rules\, everyone is special\, and the warmth of the neighborhood shines. \nTricia Elam Walker is an award-winning author\, attorney and educator.  Her first novel\, Breathing Room\, was published by Simon & Schuster/PocketBooks in 2001. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post\, The Baltimore Sun\, Essence and other publications.  She has provided commentary for NPR\, CNN\, the BBC and more.  Tricia’s short stories are included in the O.Henry Prize Stories\, New Stories from the South and other anthologies and her essays are published in Father’s Songs\, Dream Me Home Safely\, It’s All About Love and more. \n  \nThis will be an in-person event.

SUMMARY:Lawrence MacDonald for Am I Too Old to Save the Planet?
DESCRIPTION:Discussion with Mike Tidwell\, founder and director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN)\, and Lawrence MacDonald\, author of “Am I Too Old to Save the Planet? A Boomer’s Guide to Climate Action.” \nAlarmed by the surge in climate-related disasters\, many Americans are asking “What can I do to help?”  MacDonald’s new book\, Am I Too Old to Save the Planet? A Boomer’s Guide to Climate Action offers unexpected answers for the 70 million boomers–Americans born from 1946-1963–who are still the most powerful generation in the most powerful nation on earth.  A former foreign correspondent and vice president of the World Resources Institute\, the world’s largest environmental NGO\, Lawrence shares his journey to becoming a passionate climate activist. Packed with practical advice\, his book invites fellow boomers to join the growing global movement to save the planet. \nLawrence began his career as a reporter in Asia\, where he saw first-hand how U.S. policies affected poor people in the developing world. Expelled from China for reporting on the student democracy movement\, he became an expert in public policy communications\, with a focus on poverty reduction and the environment\, working at the World Bank\, and serving as vice president of the Center for Global Development and the World Resources Institute\, a global environmental think-and-do tank. \nHe is now a writer\, public speaker\, and volunteer climate organizer who has been arrested several times in non-violent direct action to call attention to the climate emergency. In addition to supporting CCAN’s work\, he is active in Th!rdAct\, experienced Americans working to protect democracy and a livable planet; Dayenu\, a Jewish call to climate action; and ClimateDefiance\, a youth-led group that stages surprise actions disrupting powerful people who are slowing the transition to a low-carbon economy.
