SUMMARY:Luke Goebel for Kill Dick
DESCRIPTION:A fever dream\, Kill Dick is a literary thriller that plunges into the chaos of Los Angeles\, where addiction\, privilege\, and corruption combust.  \nAt nineteen\, Susie Vogelman should be coasting: she’s an NYU dropout with no responsibilities\, endless prescription pills\, and a Brentwood estate to waste away in. But Los Angeles has other plans. A string of brutal murders targeting addicts spreads through the city\, and Susie’s ivory tower begins to crumble. The headlines point too close to home: her father’s ties to an opioid empire\, a sinister secret society\, and her own complicity in the systems holding it all together. \nThen there’s Peter Holiday\, a disgraced professor running a rehab scam so audacious it’s almost admirable. When their lives collide\, Susie and Peter are dragged into a web of privilege\, corruption\, and violence\, where every escape leads deeper into the rot. \nDark\, satirical\, and razor-sharp\, Kill Dick is a modern literary thriller that unflinchingly dissects wealth\, exploitation\, and the perilous line between survival and self-destruction. \nLUKE GOEBEL won the Ronald Sukenick Innovative Fiction Prize and the Joan Scott Memorial Fiction Award for his debut novel\, Fourteen Stories\, None of Them Are Yours. His screenwriting credits include Eileen\, starring Anne Hathaway and McKenzie Thompson\, and Causeway\, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry\, who received an Oscar nomination for his performance. He is also known for his role as co-editor at The New York Tyrant and work with Tyrant Books. He lives in Pasadena\, CA with his wife\, fellow author Ottessa Moshfegh. \nRSVP HERE.

SUMMARY:Sara Kehaulani Goo for Kuleana
DESCRIPTION:Set in one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes\, Kuleana is the story of an award-winning journalist’s effort to hold on to her family’s ancestral Hawaiian lands—and find herself along the way. \nFrom an early age\, Sara Kehaulani Goo was enchanted by her family’s land in Hawai‘i. The vast area on the rugged shores of Maui’s east side—given by King Kamehameha III in 1848—extends from mountain to sea\, encompassing ninety acres of lush\, undeveloped rainforest jungle along the rocky coastline and a massive sixteenth-century temple with a mysterious past. \nWhen a property tax bill arrives with a 500 percent increase\, Sara and her family members are forced to make a decision about the property: fight to keep the land or sell to the next offshore millionaire. When Sara returns to Maui from the mainland\, she reconnects with her great-uncle Take and uncovers the story of how much land her family has already lost over generations\, centuries-old artifacts from the temple\, and the insidious displacement of Native Hawaiians by systemic forces. \nPart journalistic offering and part memoir\, Kuleana interrogates deeper questions of identity\, legacy\, and what we owe to those who come before and after us. Sara’s breathtaking story of unexpected homecomings\, familial hardship\, and fierce devotion to ancestry creates a refreshingly new narrative about Hawai‘i\, its native people\, and their struggle to hold on to their land and culture today. \nSara Kehaulani Goo is a journalist and senior news executive who has led editorial teams at Axios\, NPR\, and The Washington Post. Her debut memoir\, Kuleana\, is a deeply personal and powerful reflection on family legacy\, Indigenous land rights\, and identity. She lives in Washington\, D.C.\, and is originally from Dana Point\, California. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below:\nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9781250333445 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:M.K. England for Roll for Love
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the paperback release of Roll for Love\, one of bookseller Mylo’s favorite D&D-themed stories. \nAbout the book: \nA second-chance queer romance about two teens whose in-world D&D characters fall in love\, but in IRL … things are more complicated\, perfect for lovers of Ashley Poston and Becky Albertalli. \nHarper Reid’s summer is not off to a great start.  After the death of her grandpa\, she moves across the country\, leaving her friends and Dungeons & Dragons group behind. She wasn’t exactly planning to start her senior year on the farm where she spent her childhood summers\, but running into Ollie Shifflet—former best friend and first crush—makes things much better. When Harper discovers Ollie and her friends are starting a new D&D campaign\, she quickly joins the group. As Harper and Ollie reconnect in the real world\, romantic tension begins to build between Harper’s brash barbarian and Ollie’s proud paladin\, but it’s all just part of the game … right? \nOllie’s future depends on keeping her bisexuality private while Harper’s dreams include an out-and-proud life in their rural town\, but as their feelings continue to grow with each gaming session\, their relationship begins threatening everything they’ve worked so hard to build. As the school year comes to a close and the campaign’s final boss looms on the horizon\, Harper and Ollie must decide: are their feelings more than just a fantasy? Because if they want a second chance at love\, they’ll have to fight for it\, both in-game and in real life. \nM. K. England grew up on the Space Coast of Florida watching shuttle launches from the backyard. These days\, they live on a micro-farm in rural Virginia packed with video games\, plants\, D&D books\, Star Wars memorabilia\, and their preschooler’s giant personality. They’re probably covered in dirt right now. M. K. is the author of ten novels for kids\, teens\, and adults\, with more on the way. You can find them at mkengland.com. \nRSVP HERE.

SUMMARY:Storytime: Laurel Snyder for Shrinking Violet
DESCRIPTION:An inspiring modern fairy tale about a brave girl who shrinks and grows depending on how she feels\, showing how all of us—no matter our size—are so much bigger than our fears. From Theodor Seuss Geisel Award-winning author Laurel Snyder and Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator LeUyen Pham. \nViolet knows what it’s like to be afraid: when you’re afraid\, you feel helpless and small. But when Violet is afraid\, she doesn’t just feel small—she actually shrinks! It’s tough to stop feeling frightened when you’re only a few centimeters tall. But when Violet’s best friend is in danger\, she’ll have to learn to deal with her fear in a new way—and save the day in the process. \nShrinking Violet is a beautifully illustrated story about fear and bravery for anyone who has ever felt scared and small. Readers will root for Violet as she finds her voice\, stands up for her friend\, and\, most importantly\, discovers the tremendous power of her own inner strength. \nLaurel Snyder is the author of many children’s books\, including Endlessly Ever After\, Orphan Island\, and Charlie & Mouse\, which won the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. She lives with her family in Atlanta\, GA. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9781797200729 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Dianne Russell for Tools to Save Our Home Planet
DESCRIPTION:Dianne Russell is one of more than 50 contributing authors to Patagonia’s Tools to Save Our Home Planet: A Changemaker’s Guidebook\, where she wrote the chapter on collaboration — how environmental and conservation organizations can work together more effectively to achieve shared goals. Dianne will be in conversation with Mike Tidwell about what it takes to build and sustain successful collaborations for environmental and conservation impact.\n\nDescribed as a “global guidebook for activism in the age of climate chaos and social injustice\,” Tools to Save Our Home Planet: A Changemaker’s Guidebook captures the wisdom and best advice from activists in the field\, creating a resource for anyone hoping to hone core skills. The lessons and examples it shares are as current\, diverse\, and global as the changemakers working around the world. A go-to resource for driving change\, offering anyone who is passionate about environmental and social justice a timely and relevant resource to support their mission-aligned work\, this book is intended for both those who are new to taking action and seasoned activists and community organizers who want to learn how others are finding success. The hope is that it will become dog-eared and scribbled in — a reassuring and resourceful companion to the environmental and environmental justice movements.\n\nDianne Russell brings over 40 years of experience in leading a nonprofit and working with thousands of groups and agencies that work on environmental and community-based issues. She has played the role of process designer\, meeting facilitator\, coach\, backbone staff\, evaluator\, and foundation advisor in over 45 collaborative efforts across the U.S. and Canada.\nDianne is a proud Marylander and lives in Prince George’s County with her wife/sweetie and a rambunctious Standard Poodle. Questions about baseball\, gardening\, social change theories\, photography\, LGBTQ issues\, or her home state of Ohio will spark very enthusiastic discussions with her.\n\nMike Tidwell is a journalist\, author\, and climate activist living in Takoma Park\, MD. His most recent book is an exploration of global warming’s impact in his own front yard\, called The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue: A Story of Climate and Hope on One American Street (St. Martin’s Press\, March 2025). Publishers Weekly magazine named the book one of the best nonfiction books of 2025. A passionate conservationist\, he founded the Chesapeake Climate Action Network in 2002\, where he has led local and national campaigns for clean energy. He lives on Willow Avenue in Takoma Park\, MD\, with his wife Beth and their cat Macy Gray.\n\nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below:\nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9781952338168\nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Brendan Ballou for When Companies Run the Courts
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of Brendan Ballou’s newest work\, which definitively exposes more of the seedy underbelly of the American legal system. \nAbout the book: America has a hidden justice system. There\, decisions are made in secret\, and “judges” are paid for by the companies and abusers who are being sued. Victims usually lose. But when they do\, they cannot appeal\, and they cannot turn to real courts for help. \nThey are trapped in this system\, and quite likely\, so are you. You joined it when you accepted the Terms and Conditions on a website\, opened a new credit card\, or started a new job. When you did\, you agreed to be trapped in this secret justice system called “forced arbitration.” Through its secrecy and corruption\, forced arbitration helps companies cheat their workers\, helps banks deceive their customers\, and helps predators act with impunity. If companies and the very powerful often seem beyond the reach of the law\, it’s because they are\, and forced arbitration is the reason. \nYet despite the fact that forced arbitration profoundly shapes our lives\, almost nothing has been written about it. Brendan Ballou’s When Companies Run the Courts changes that. It shows how forced arbitration came to be\, how it makes your life worse\, and how we might escape it. \nBrendan Ballou is the founder of the Public Integrity Project. He is a former federal prosecutor\, and for two years prosecuted rioters who attacked the Capitol on January 6\, 2021. He previously served as special counsel for private equity in the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. He is the author of Plunder: Private Equity’s Plan to Pillage America\, and When Companies Run the Courts: Forced Arbitration and America’s Secret Justice System. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9781541705715 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Pir Zia Inayat Khan\, PhD for Tears From the Mother of the Sun: A Secret History of the World
DESCRIPTION:In this globe-spanning chronicle\, Pir Zia Inayat Khan\, leader of the Inayatiyya\, sets forth an astonishing sequence of legends revealing little-known connections between ancient cultures and spiritual lineages. \nFramed as a dialogue between the Iranianepic poet Firdausi and his tutelary daimon\, this novella follows the tradition of medieval Persian belles-lettres in which prose passages are punctuated with metered verses. The daimon reveals to the hitherto depressed poet the inner history of the world as reflected in the missions of a succession of sages moving through Earth’s lands and ages. Readers will learn of the creation of the universe\, the war of the angels and the jinns\, the exile of Adam and Eve\, and the deeds of Melchizedek and Enoch. They will also explore the rise of the Nephilim\, the advent of ancient civilizations\, the origins of the Abrahamic faiths\, and the history of the Grail and Emerald Tablet. Beautiful paintings by Amruta Patil bring the legends to life. \nThe cumulative effect of the traditions synthesized here is a re-sacralization of the human experience across time\, space\, and cultures\, achieved through an unexpected marriage of myth and history. \nPir Zia Inayat Khan\, PhD\, is a scholar of religion and teacher of Sufism in the universalist Sufi lineage of his grandfather\, Hazrat Inayat Khan. Pir Zia is president of the Inayatiyya and founder of Suluk Academy\, a school of Sufi contemplative study and practice. He is author of Immortality: A Traveler’s Guide; Dream Flowers: The Collected Works of Noor Inayat Khan with a Critical Commentary by Pir Zia Inayat Khan; Mingled Waters: Sufism and the Mystical Unity of Religions; and Saracen Chivalry: Counsels on Valor\, Generosity and the Mystical Quest. Pir Zia divides his time between Richmond\, Virginia and Suresnes\, France. inayatiyya.org \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9798888501825 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Gautham Rao for White Power: Policing American Slavery
DESCRIPTION:The violent legacy of the US’s slaveholding oligarchy and the brutal policing of Black Americans.\n\nBeginning in the colonial era and growing through the American Revolution and the Southern plantation system\, slaveholders’ violent police regime continued after Emancipation\, through Reconstruction\, to today. Moving across time\, space\, and place\, White Power uncovers how slaveholders created their own white supremacist police and government to deny Black people rights\, power\, and humanity. \nLegal historian Gautham Rao introduces us to laws that empowered white people to forcibly exercise their desired racial superiority over Black people\, shows how they spread from the South throughout the nation\, and traces the rebellions\, fugitivity\, activism\, and legal systems that challenged them. Rao’s narrative includes slaveholders\, lawmakers\, and the Ku Klux Klan\, dramatic escapes by runaway enslaved people\, abolitionist activism in courtroom showdowns\, and pitched battles between white paramilitaries and enslaved rebels. He offers a new interpretation of the history of policing in the US\, centering the institution and legacy of slavery and speaking to the origins of today’s persistence of white vigilance\, white supremacist militia groups\, and white racist cops determined to maintain power over Black people by force. Equally determined\, however\, was Black Americans’ refusal to accept it. \nGautham Rao is associate professor of history at American University in Washington\, DC\, and Editor-in-Chief of Law and History Review. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \n\nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9781469694849 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Gareth Hinds for The Odyssey: A Graphic Novel
DESCRIPTION:With bold imagery and an ear tuned to the music of Homer’s epic poem\, award-winning graphic artist Gareth Hinds reinterprets the ancient classic as it’s never been told before. A New York Times bestseller\, now in a sumptuous collectible edition with new cover design\, gold foil\, and stenciled edges. \n“Gareth Hinds brings The Odyssey to life in a masterful blend of art and storytelling. Vivid and exciting\, this graphic novel is a worthy new interpretation of Homer’s epic.” —Rick Riordan\, author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series \nFresh from his triumphs in the Trojan War\, Odysseus\, king of Ithaca\, wants nothing more than to return home to his family. Instead\, he offends the sea god\, Poseidon\, who dooms him to years of shipwreck and wandering. Battling man-eating monsters\, violent storms\, and the supernatural seductions of sirens and sorceresses\, Odysseus will need all his strength and cunning—and a little help from Mount Olympus—to make his way home and seize his kingdom from the schemers who seek to wed his queen and usurp his throne. Gareth Hinds masterfully reinterprets a story of heroism\, adventure\, and high action that has been told and retold for more than 2\,500 years—though never quite like this. \nGareth Hinds is the creator of critically-acclaimed graphic novels based on literary classics\, including Beowulf\, The Odyssey\, The Iliad\, Romeo & Juliet\, Macbeth\, and POE: Stories and Poems.” Gareth is a recipient of the Boston Public Library’s “Literary Lights for Children” award. His books can be found in bookstores and English classrooms across the country\, and his illustrations have appeared in such diverse venues as the Society of Illustrators\, the New York Historical Society\, and over a dozen published video games. \nIf you’d like to purchase this title online and still support People’s Book\, follow the link below: \nhttps://bookshop.org/a/98269/9781536254525 \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:Cara Benson for An Armsfull of Birds
DESCRIPTION:A story of recovery\, love\, and loss—a memoir of healing ourselves and the natural world. \nCara Benson did not come to love easy. As a low bottom addict\, she crawled through subway tunnels and partnered with an abusive man. When she came face to face with her own death\, she chose life. Her journey of survival led her into recovery\, to climbing mountains\, and ultimately to Jon\, the man with whom she cultivated a relationship that began as “second chance lovers” and slowly developed into one as lifetime partners. \nYears later\, Benson unexpectedly found herself in devastation as she came to terms with losing Jon to suicide. As she retreated into her grief\, she also retreated into the woods of upstate New York\, exploring the forests not as the avid hiker she’d become in recovery\, but as a meanderer who had lost her way. Here she found more grief in her observation of the effects of climate change. \nIn confronting her loss\, Benson came to realize that the lessons she learned from loving Jon in sickness\, health\, and death could be applied to her relationship with the non-human world. From squirreling away oak acorns for reforestation of a logged property to maintaining feeders for the birds Jon adored\, Benson’s daily life became a sort of field guide for how to live with a deep and abiding commitment to the future of the planet despite challenging odds. \nMoving through the intensely personal and kindred terrain of love\, recovery\, and loss\, An Armsfull of Birds is a climate memoir that tells the story of developing deeply held commitments to ourselves\, to those we love\, and ultimately to the ailing natural world. \nCara Benson‘s writing has been published in The New York Times\, Boston Review\, Orion\, Sierra Magazine\, The Brooklyn Rail\, Terrain\, and selected for Best American Poetry. She has received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship and the bpNichol Award. Benson wrote a series on walking in the woods for the Best American Poetry website and taught poetry in a NY State Correctional Facility for eight years. She lives in a former church on the ancestral homelands of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians in upstate NY. An Armsfull of Birds: A Personal Field Guide to Love\, Loss\, and Commitment is her first memoir. \nMartha Anne Toll is a novelist and literary and cultural critic. Her second novel\, Duet for One\, came out this past spring to generous praise. Her debut novel\, Three Muses\, won the Petrichor Prize for Finely Crafted Fiction and was subsequently shortlisted for the Gotham Book Prize. Toll is a recipient of numerous fellowships at writers residencies. She is a member of the National Book Critics Circle\, and serves on the Board of Directors of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation. She comes to writing full-time after a career in social justice. \nRSVP HERE.
